Isn’t “poachers” the name used to reference those who break wildlife rules.

I guess come January 1st 2022 those hunters that continue to use cameras to locate big game will now need to be called “poachers” and not hunters.

One of his main guides was Griz Montoya and he was the one listed as the person suing AZGFD over the 10% NR cap and how it violated interstate commerce. They actually won the first round and the AZGFD had to go back in the draw and award a bunch of tags to NR. There were some big names like Jeff Foxworthy and Jim Zumbo that were the lucky ones, however it was such a big stink that I believe Jeff declined his tag. Eventually the case made it to the 9th district court and it was overturned. Not to long after that I believe the Senator from NV Harry Reid but forth S. 339 which basically made it where the states can manage their wildlife however they see fit including how they distribute their tags.

I'm not saying I like it. I think Newberg has been hunting AZ for years way before he got so popular. Not so many years ago AZGFD had whitetail tags and thousands of javelina tags go unsold in the southern units even in the leftover pass. There's a reason why the AZGFD changed the bag limit on javelina. From a biological standpoint and a financial standpoint these unsold tags aren't good news. AZGFD starts thinking of ways to promote hunting in the state and in comes Randy Newberg. I'm not saying he is solely responsible but he was certainly one of the first ones I seen promoting how awesome the hunting in AZ is. He started promoting how there were all these leftover tags and how once they go to leftovers there is now no 10% cap on NR. And the ball just started rolling from there. My guess is the AZGFD seen in instant return on their investment. No Randy isn't getting special tags or any favors he's just a very smart dude that has figured out how to hunt all over the country and get somebody else to fit the bill and the AZGFD marketing team found the right guy at the right price to see a nice return on their investments. Does it suck that there are no more leftovers and those hunts are now getting harder to get? Sure it does but you can't blame the AZGFD for trying to do something to turn the tide on all the unused tags that weren't being utilized.

The difference I see is the department gets way more bang for their buck from paying Randy than paying for billboards or thousands of bumper stickers. I get it that people are mad now because tags might be harder to get. I've been hunting 36B since 1994 and seen some of the spots I hunt on YouTube and yeah it sucks that there aren't leftover permits anymore but I can't really blame the AZGFD for trying to promote hunting in the state and in the process generate more money. I think if you look at just about all western states there has been a significant increase in the number of applicants compared to available tags and I don't believe it's all because of YouTube.

So you think people turn in truthful data because they're worried about a violation, sure they do. I know plenty of people now that lie on the surveys the AZGFD sends out because they think they won't get tags because they're to successful or they will cut tags in their favorite unit ect. ect. Unless it is a physical mandatory check in of the animal who's to say mandatory reporting is any more accurate than statistical data with a plus or minus error. As for the YouTube issue what's the difference in the AZGFD paying a Randy Newberg to promote hunting opportunities or paying for a billboard or radio time, bumper stickers that say fish AZ. The department certainly needs to clean up the CC fiascos they seem to keep having no doubt.

So you're saying that people are 100% honest when they mandatory report? Unless they are physically checking in the animal I highly doubt it so what makes that data any more accurate.

I don't know of a Wildlife agency in the country that uses pure facts to determine wildlife populations or hunter harvest. I do believe agencies use the best wildlife science tools they have at making their best guesses though.

I'm just curious how many western states have a mandatory harvest reports? I know NM does and do they allow OTC deer hunts. Are there any western states that have OTC deer tags. The states that don't have mandatory harvest reports are their Wildlife agencies just guessing?

Of course there is a way to find out but you might have to work at it and I would bet that Randy Newberg gets paid annually since the AZGFD budget is annually and approved by the states legislature every year. If you really want to know why don't you start by sending every commissioner a civil email asking if youtubers such as Randy Newberg get paid to come to AZ to hunt? How does that fit into the North American Model? How does this directly benefit the wildlife in AZ and how has this affected Resident opportunity?

Exactly, WY one of the most generous states out there for NR has a task force right now deciding on how to get more tags into R hands. WY will soon be 90-10 on their big 5 and it wont be long before deer, elk and antelope are also 90-10 in WY.

I believe Jim Zumbo also was issued a tag.

I hope if they don't charge general prices they will change it so they do. They set aside tags for youth which is great, I'm all for it but if a parent wants to swing for the fences for a premium tag and then throw a youth tag as a back up then pay the full general price no matter which tag they draw.

I call BS, show some physical proof of AZGFD giving tags to NR or guys that helped on criminal cases.

They get money back exactly like you said License sales and the match money it generates. AZGFD can't function off of tag sales only, nothing makes the department happier than seeing record number of applicants every draw period in fact the ultimate goal would be to have every resident in the state purchase a hunting and fishing license.

Why don't you go to his website and ask him directly Randy might just tell you straight up what his deal with AZGFD is.

I'm sure you're well aware that the AZGFD gets zero money from the tax payers of AZ, they get their money from tag, license sells, lottery money, contract money, match money from PR & DJ ect. It's no secrete that the AZGFD is ran like a business and quite frankly they have to. I can guarantee you that the money invested in Randy Newberg has come back to the department 10 fold. If it really bugs you that much instead of crying on the internet why don't you go directly to the source and demand answers. You might have to work at it a little bit but i believe it's called the Freedom of Information act and unless you're after specific info like personal files you'll eventually get the answers you're looking for.

Pretty sure Amanda who owns this site has gotten grants from the AZGFD to promote hunting for women, also be willing to bet that the critter groups that put on JR hunt camps also get grant money from AZGFD to promote hunting. Saying the state doesn't need to promote hunting is like saying the beer companies don't need to advertise for their beer products. The more license sells for AZGFD the more match money they get from the USFWS from PR & DJ money.

Pretty sure Colorado DNR has given Randy Newberg money also.
