Legal Deer in NM?

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I have been reading the NM Game and Fish regs and cannot find what a legal deer is, I see FAD (Forked Antlered Deer), I have not hunted in New Mexico for 4 or 5 years and a deer used to have 3 points on one side (eye guard counted as a point)....

I cannot find..... but I think a forked deer is now legal (two points on one side, eye guards do not matter).... can anybody help point me to the rule?

Looking forward to my muzzleloader hunt in 23 in two weeks....anybody have that hunt?

"Fork-Antlered Deer (FAD)

Any deer possessing an antler which has a definite fork, showing two

or more distinct points. A burr at the base does not constitute a fork."

Hope you have a good time. :)

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure a FAD is a two point not including an eye guard. so for either mule deer or whitetail, if it has an eye guard, that point does not count towards the "Forked Antler"

Bill,

Thanks for the info, I searched the regs (withe Adobe search) once I saw your post and found it instantly. No eye guard required, just definite fork.

I hope its a good time also.

however, I think for whitetail, the point requirement is 3 points on one side, of which, one MAY be an eyeguard.

Doesn't matter, whitetail or Mule deer, Bill has it straight out of the regs. As long as it has two distinct points, it legal.
