Affects of Rain on Deer

Recommended Posts

Hello I was wondering if any of you guys are knowledgable about how rain affects deer and their movements??? With all this rain this week do you think most deer are hunkered down in thick brush/trees trying to stay warm and dry??? if so, when the rain subsides will they be out moving and feeding like crazy??? or do you think it doesn't really affect them at all and they just go about their normal habits in the rain?? Any input would be appreciated, thanks

They're gonna get where they feel safe number one. With the rain/wind like it is, it really messes with their senses; no wild animal likes it when their senses get screwed up. I watched a Bull for over 2 hours in November trying to get the wind just right before he bedded down. He was lookin' everywhere, moving a few feet here and there (not feeding), finally he got where he felt safe and bedded up.

With the availability of water like it is, they won't need to travel too far to water, if they have to at all.

With the wind as nasty as it is, they will be in sheltered cuts, bowels, thickets, or on a ridgeline that isn't getting hammered with wind. It's usually tough goin' finding them when the wind is nasty. They seem to hole up pretty good. If you can get the wind right, still hunting through thickets might produce an opportunity. During breaks in the weather and after it passes they should move well. Good luck

They deffenitly dont move as much on the open hills but sometimes youd be surprised, they could be following some hot doe and they could be anywhere. Most likely the will be out of the wind but dont pass up good country, ive seen them on open hill sides in 50mph winds and their flags are getting wrapped around them. This weather affects us hunters more than the deer they live in this crap.

Was out this afternoon with the rain on and off again. Saw five groups of deer and one herd of pigs out and about in the rain. Besides shaking the water off like a dog the didn't seem to care about the rain.
