Hornady reloading manual

Recommended Posts

does anyone else find their max loads to extremely conservative?

My Serria manual list 46 grains of RL15 as the max load for 180 grain boat tail .308 win.

Lyman says 45 grains

Hornady says 42 is Max for their amax and sst.

I use the Berger book. Most books are fairly conservative.

They are all very conservative, they have to be to avoid litigation. If you look at reloading books from 40 years ago you will see a huge difference in max loads. Too many variations in chamber size, free bore, temperature etc. I am not afraid to exceed under certain conditions, but most of the time I find a sweet spot within the published load range. I quit wasting money on books and just start low and work up. There is plenty of legitimate published information on the internet to come up with a starting point.

you will find the same thing in new editions vs old editions, compare the most recent to one 2 editions previous and the new one is always more conservative - lawyers getting in their 2 cents to avoid lawsuits, same with triggers

Yeah that makes since. I was just curious about a 4 grain difference in max loads between two most recent manuals.
