Camera Advice Please

Recommended Posts

I acquired a cannon rebel xs. doesn't have a lens or a charger. I was thinking of buying a nice lens to take pics of deer for it but would that even be worth it? if it is, ant recommendation on a lens for it?

I just upgrated from that camera. That will be plenty good. Camera lenses can quickly get extremely expensive (like good binocs). I love my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and it's super glass.

The third party lens are pretty good these days. Don't think you need Canon glass.

You might also consider a superzoom camera.

Nikon is soon to be shipping the P900.

There are also the Panasonic FZ superzooms.

My thought is that you would find a lens under 300mm too limiting for deer/wildlife.

The new Tamron 150-600 is pretty nice for the $1000 and is getting popular for a less expensive telephoto.

Canon just released a new 100-400mm lens, so you might find the old version on the used market for about $900 as some upgrade.

to be honest im not even really scared to spend $1k on a lens but just don't want to spend 1k if its not worth it for this camera, since I know nothing about them.

so 150-600mm for shooting way out there?

Unless I'm mistaken the Rebel is not a full sensor camera. That adds magnification to your lens. A 600mm become a 900mm or so. You would need to look up the magnification factor for that camera. Probably 1.6x ish.
