Elk, moon phase and the Rut

Recommended Posts

I too believe it has to do with a lot of things, But do notice the colder the better. Last year we were out and they started up and a big storm hit and they shut up for a few days. From my experience it seems the 2nd week is usually better. Hopefully this year the rut will be awesome. Need to put some meat in the freezer

I'm pretty certain it's not September.

Try taking a weeks vacation around October 10th. ;)

It was bugle heaven the last 2 years.

Yes, colder is always better. But..... All things being equal I've always seen the best rut days during the last week of September. Regarding the moon, I believe it stirs everything up a bit. Just like there are more babies born in a hospital or more crimes committed during a full moon, the elk will get a little nuttier during the full moon. However, depending on the rise/set time, it could be in the middle of the night. Also a great time to see mid day movement.
