Field Judging

Recommended Posts

So, I am trying to play the game but have no experience on coues whitetail.

I'm looking through my binos at a coues, which happens to be looking right at me and his antlers are as wide as his ears.

What is the general, field judging measurement for spread?

On mulies, I believe the general rule of thumb is 24" spread if it is as wide as the ears.....

Eartip to eartip is about 14". Eye corner to nose tip is about 5 1/2 to 6" Ear length is about 6" This should help judging tine length and inside spread.

Duwane Adams' How to Hunt Coues Deer book has some good info and pics with scores. Also the the photo section off the main home page here.

C.J. McElroy, the guy who founded Safari Club International and took an amazing number of B&C, RW, and SCI record animals told me if I had to look twice at an animal to judge whether or not to shoot it, it probably wouldn't score very high. "The best ones look too big to be real," he said.
