quail dogs

Recommended Posts

Thinkin about buying a quail dog and I am pretty new to quail hunting but I enjoy it alot. I would like to know what dogs are most affordable and easiest to train? The only birds we hunted were turkeys, goose and duck. Those didnt really require a dog. It was funny to go swimming after the ducks and geese in 20 degree weather though.

German shorthairs are probably most commonly used. I have a German Wirehair. Other considerations would be a Brittany, English Pointer, and Visla. Dogs with longer hair tend to collect seeds and burrs. A light colored coat will be cooler for the dog while working, and easier for you to see.

Try a google search for choosing an upland bird dog

I happen to like brittanies, I own 2 and they are very smart. They point without training, and are easy to teach to retrieve. I have hunted with shorthairs and trained them also. They would be my second choice. The reason being shorthairs are heavier and tear up their feet more in rocks. If they did not have this problem then I would say go with either one, but I beleive brittanies are the best.

Kast, sounds like the same people. Chris has the sire "Duce" correct? I am friends with Sean and Jody, the owners of the bitch.
