Time to bust out the Insanity DVD

Hyper .. this is basically what I have been doing since January and down nearly 80 lbs ... That feeling horrible happens, often associated with your body detoxing and adjusting ... it lasted about a week for me but I pushed through it .... doubled my intake of daily spinach, threw in an extra banana at afternoon snack, found a good Multi-Vitamin and kept the water intake high .... for me once my body adjusted there were no more issues. Str8shot and I sound like we have a similar thing going on

Scott- I actually followed my doc's advice to the letter and transitioned slowly to the no bread routine. He told me a dramatic no-carb change would make me hit a wall just like you did and wouldn't keep going. So I took simple starch carbs out dinner first and did that for a month - keeping my breakfast and lunch just the same way it had always been. After a month I took a chunk of carbs out of lunch - added vegetables and additional protein. Worked on getting the starch down to an equivalent of 1/3 of a cup of oats, and the rest protein and vegetables. I could have done that pretty quickly but I did it over 6-7 weeks. Now I'm on a "descending carb" eating schedule. First meal of the day has between 25 and 35 grams of simple carbs (beans, rice, oats, etc) vegetables don't count so I eat lots of them. Lunch has between 15 and 20 simple carb grams and dinner has no simple carbs. Alcohol is empty calories and is limited to 6oz of red wine 1x a day - 3x a week or less is preferred so that's what I do. Beer is one 16oz serving per week. Distilled alcohol once a month (at most) - no more than 3oz and can't be combined with any other booze although that might have been forgotten a time or two around a campfire. Soda is limited to REAL soda - no artificial sweeteners - and no more than 6oz per day. The fact you don't get much booze and soda kinda drills the point home that they aren't good for you. To keep things real-life realistic, you can still have them - just not much. Basically you can eat like a king in the morning - eat smaller high quality stuff before bed. Taking the project on slowly and re-training my body was the key to making this last. I tried Atkins a few years back and had the same experience you did. Lost weight but couldn't function and hated it. This time around I'm determined to see it through and going slow I haven't felt crappy at all. I have followed the plan pretty darn close, minus a cheat day here and there, and it is working. Once I am down to 170 or so - the eating plan goes into Phase II. Not sure what that looks like yet.

That's a great food list - Staying away from the soda, spaghetti, bread & tortillas seems to be the ticket. No sleepy unproductive afternoons after a lunchtime burrito or lasagne carb load. The weight drops off slow-n-steady too. Takes some getting used to, swapping bread for vegetables, but you feel great in about 2 weeks.

OK - Monday has arrived - time for transparency; I'm 205.4 this morning - getting close to 40 down. Scale fluctuates 3 each direction - nothing I can do about that. Excellent workout from 530am to 630am. Better. Still too fat. Around 35 left to go. Maybe 40 - we'll see - that's a ways away.

How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI
Healy Arms replied to Healy Arms's topic in Hunting Fitness
Exactly. I too was lying to myself - "I'm keeping up so I must be fine". And then there's the days that you actually out walk an out of shape skinny guy and you begin to really believe the voice in your head "yeah, I'm a little thick - but I'm in great shape" Eventually the total BS and denial get tossed in your face on a elk hunt when you realize you're packing two heavy quarters out of the canyon - the one on the pack frame and the one from your double chin down to your fat butt that you don't get to take off when you get back to the truck. Then to top it off, one of your buddies drives the point home with a fond-memory photo from the trip. You see it and think "man... my brain doesn't see me that way. Am I really that fat?" LOL I examined my chin brisket in the mirror, had a quick & personal come to Jesus and the answer was "yes, walrus abs, you are". It was late November 2013 - a good & bad day all in one. I will hunt AT LEAST 60lbs lighter this year, maybe 70, and I can't wait. Between the blubber loss and the year-long cardio I've been doing, it should be a great season. Onward... -
How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI

A report finds that 80% of cops are overweight - http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2014/08/14/fbi-80-percent-of-police-officers-are-overweight/ Shocker! Nearly 70% of the country is overweight or obese and a segment of our public service community is 80% overweight. Okay - I'm not shocked. Here is a glimpse of the American mindset that's allowed this to get out of control: http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/what-me-fat-most-americans-dont-think-so-poll-finds-n128406 Despite 2/3rds of the country being too heavy: "Gallup found that 21 percent of women said they were overweight and trying to lose weight, compared with 15 percent of men who said the same. Meanwhile, 10 percent of women said they were trying to lose weight even though they didn't consider themselves overweight, compared with 6 percent of men who said the same." I'm surprised they could even answer the questions with their heads that far under the sand. Whether it's a BMI chart, a cloth tape around your gut, or a hydrostatic dunk, getting your mind wrapped around the idea that you've gotten too fat and sedentary is step one. From this Gallup poll it appears that’s not easy. At my 245lb peak I had spiraled way out of control long before I called for a personal timeout and got my mind right. I still have a long way to go, but at least it's going in the right direction now. As hunters we're acutely aware when we're too heavy and out of shape. Americans that don't hump packs and elk quarters uphill every year are easily fooled. -
Love it - excellent overall functional fitness program. Of course, my buddies that do it religiously never shut up about it - or the mudder - or the spartan or the.... Thinking about it - what is there to bash about CF? I've been a couple times as a guest and other than being a tough workout, what is there to complain about?

How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI
Healy Arms replied to Healy Arms's topic in Hunting Fitness
Please note - I did say that the Doc provided for big frames and lots of muscle as a way out of BMI top end calculations. He just challenged that most people use that as an excuse when in fact they need to lose more weight. As I stated, he said come back at 180 ripped and hard and he'd call for an exception. -
How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI

No sir - and doing old age as a fattie is very unappealing. It was time to change. -
I'm in - Last November I looked in the mirror and decided I'd made enough excuses and told myself enough lies about my eating and my weight. I needed to lose about 70 to 75 pounds. As of this morning I am down 38lbs. I'm all in on this CW check-in idea until my last 35lbs of blubber are history. I can't believe I hunted even one stupid day carrying around a 70lb training dummy with me that I couldn't take off. For God's sake - not counting the one I was already carrying that's TWO extra backpacks with binos, tripod, water and misc stuff. Not this year - Let's roll. Mark Healy

We had some boys in town from Missouri for a predator calling trip. I asked them if they'd like to go after coyotes, fox, bobcat or a lion. Of course they said they'd like to get a lion while they were here (as if it's that easy). Then - one of them jokingly said "hey, let's get one of each". I said, that's a tall order in 2.5 days - let's get rolling pronto.... Well - we got 3 of the 4. Started out on day one with a coyote on the opening stand. A mix of coyote vocals and small prey distress closed the deal: Picked up and hauled butt for a place to get a fox with thick fur and lots of red in the coat. Found the right one on day two: Stayed in generally the same area and called the deep wooded cuts for a bobcat. As day 2 was coming to a close - bam - here he comes to a mix of young female coyote vocals, rodents, birds, a rabbits and - boom - down he goes: Evidently the half day we had left just wasn't enough time for me to get a mountain lion called up too. Oh well. It certainly wasn't for a lack of effort. All were called with a Wildlife Technologies Might Atom 21 electronic call. All were shot with DPMS Compact Hunter rifles. It probably goes without saying - yes - those are items we stock at HEALY. And, if you've never heard a Mighty Atom e-caller - do yourself a favor and come on in for a demo. Please bring your current caller with you for comparison's sake. It's time to hear what your predators have been missing.

So... A guy comes in the store to get some GLOCK 17 mags. Roger tells him yes we have them right here, and hands the guy a mag. The guy says - this is a high-cap mag, do you have a 10 rounder? Roger says - oh you must live in California The guy says - no I live in Tucson, but the current federal government mandate is for 10 rounder mags Roger says - yes, but you live in a free state and the federal magazine ban expired, you can can have the good ones The guy says - yes but the maximum mandated by the current administration is 10 rounds. I'm going to support them and only buy 10 rounders. As I scratch my head and think, good lord - you just can't make this stuff up...

Here's a $100 Safeway gift card and a bus pass to Orange County. We'll melt that menacing thing down for you (one steel match at a time).
-
Better yet... We don't even carry them. Hey dude - how about a real magazine and 7 snap caps? If that won't get 'er done for you call a gun shop in Kalifornia.
-
Oh heck no - Mr. astronaut wants the good stuff. He just doesn't think YOU should have the good stuff. If he comes in I'll steer him to the drum mags. Everyone else - flintlocks

The First Mountain Lion Called in and Killed Under AZ's New Night Hunting Regs
Healy Arms posted a topic in Wildlife Callers Blog
Wildlife Callers’ Lion Calling Expert Dave Martens and his shooter Dan Tone are the first hunters in AZ to record a lion harvest under the new “Daylong” hunting rules. Dan Tone and Arizona's First Nighttime Lion Since 2011 Rule Changes Just 2.5 weeks after we reported the new Arizona nighttime hunting regulations for mountain lions on THIS POST, Dave Martens of Wildlife Callers and Dan Tone (who’s been featured on the WC Blog before) set out in one of the nighttime lion hunting areas and connected with a mature 7-9 year old female cougar – the actual age will be determined by the AZ Game & Fish. The lion took about 30-32 minutes to arrive on the stand and came to a mixed bag of sounds. Here are some of the details: Arizona Mountain Lion and Deuce the Lion Calling Jack Russel Locations: When you think of nighttime lion hunting think of bighorn sheep. Heavy lion predation has long been a issue for bighorn herd growth and sustainability around AZ, accordingly the locations in AZ for hunting lions at night have been chosen by the AZ Game & Fish biologists to provide the most relief to the Desert and Rocky Mountain Bighorn populations. There isn’t a hunt unit listed in the Arizona Game and Fish lion hunting regulations that we haven’t scouted or hunted, and not found lion sign in. Actually, we’ve called lions in most of the special units, so to answer the obvious question “where is the best place to go find lions” — all of the special bag units have lions — actually the whole state has lions. Sounds: Dave’s calling style is typically mix-it-up and throw out an active multi-critter sound scene for the predator to get interested in. We’ve said it here before – you can’t confuse a lion by playing sounds that typically don’t go together – they’re not that smart. Thus, when you create a completely unbelievable sound scene by playing ten minutes of mixed rabbit & small bird distress, followed by several minutes of deer fights and deer distress, followed by javelina sounds and distress, the lion never says ‘hey…I know that would NEVER happen in nature.” It’s just sound stimulus – nothing more – there are no bad sounds. Mix it up. Dan Tone, Deuce, and an AZ Mountain Lion The Caller: As is always the case, Dave was using his Wildlife Technologies Mighty Atom 21. If you haven’t heard one, do yourself a favor and give us a call — truly amazing. The Hunt: Dave & Dan chose the calling location based on past experience in the area. Dave has called near the area before and seen plenty of sign along the long ridge lines and hardpan wash bottoms the area is known for. They kept the caller less than 20 yards away from them when they set up along the side of a dry wash. The moon was nearly full and visibility was pretty good. The plan was to, if possible, leave their spotlights & high intensity flashlights off until a lion was spotted or something was heard nearby that needed lighted investigation. Dave had been playing his varied & lengthy list of sounds for about 30 minutes when the form of a solitary lion was spotted walking toward the speaker. The lion arrived on Dan’s side of the caller and was closing toward the speaker in a deliberate and unhurried fashion. Dan raised his 12 gauge and waited patiently while the lion continued to close on the speaker. The lone lion eventually cut the distance to the speaker down to just 6-yards and came to a stop. Dan activated the high-intensity light mounted on his shotgun and looked at the lion for a few seconds. He immediately confirmed what he already knew, the lion was a large, mature cougar. Boom! Dan shot the lion with a load of #4 buckshot and at just 19-20 yards away it was killed immediately. Good View of the Large Shoulders and Head on the Lion Night Calling Logistics: Dan said that hunting lions at night should continue to be more and more productive as they learn more about doing it and better ways to set up. But, he cautioned, the logistics of calling after the sun goes down are more complex than in daylight. He said that something as small as a poorly designed spotlight or a flashlight that’s not bright enough can ruin a stand. Stand selection takes longer. Walking to the stand takes longer. Tripping hazards with guns, callers, and extra gear makes things interesting. And oftentimes once you’ve set up and think you’re in a good spot, you turn on the light only to find you really have almost zero visibility and have to move. Takeaways: Scouting and field experience cannot be underestimated. Dave has spent many hours in this area scouting for lion sign, using trail cameras to confirm hunches, and calling during the daytime when it wasn’t legal to call at night. His expertise and knowledge really paid off. If you like what you’ve read here please - Sign up for our free newsletter! Thanks again for reading – your comments are welcome below.
