    Friday in Payson Trail Cameras

Phoenix people are spoiled. Don't you know "The Valley" runs the world and the rest of you suckers are just living in it? Its like the hunger games, Phoenix is the capitol and the rest of the state exists for their entertainment. The only reason to hold an event outside of the capitol is to suppress the all powerful people there. Payson happens to be the same amount of drive time from my home as Carefree. Unfortunately I am already headed to the Kaibab. Oh well, I don't have a dog in this fight anyway.

    the draw

Notice no deadline for card updates this time. You can’t be late if you don’t have a deadline.

    Need a tile wetsaw

I do not but if you haven’t already checked Home Depot give that a try. They rent a lot of tools for really cheap.

    Monday Check in

Monday 4.5 miles @ 9 min pace before work followed up by Piestewa Peak after work. Tuesday 75 ea push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks in sets of 30/25/20 Wednesday 5 miles at 8:50 pace Thursday will match Tuesday. Friday will be 4.5 miles again. Today was my lowest weight since returning home from the kaibab last year. This desk job is killing me.

Don’t overlook that steel joist lead times are >12 months right now. With more and more delays coming by the day.

    Side by Side Recommendations

I have a Honda pioneer 1000-5. I wanted seating for 5 but also bed space. This works good because the overall length is only about 10’6”. For us, we have 3 or less people 75% of the time so the jump seats are only for family joy riding. For our uses going 5 mph down steep rocky trails is a lot more important than going 80 mph in a sandy wash bottom. Having a real transmission, selectable 4wd and lockers is more important than turbos and 30” of travel. But that’s our needs.

    ST MAXX??

Anybody using Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX tires on a half ton? I tow a lot and am generally hard on tires. I currently have Nitto Terragrappler G2. I am satisfied and got 50k out of them. I would love to hear everyone’s experience with durability, traction and wear on the cooper’s.

    Unit 27 outfitter

Inevitably, some applicants will never get a tag so it’s not an either or scenario. And I don’t see the additional “deservedness” of one applicant having applied for one more year being commensurate with the difference in draw odds between max and one-off max. I know that it’s shitty to think that some people who have waited 40 years may never get to hunt. I would love it if we all could be guaranteed that possibility. But I also think it is equally as shitty for someone who is 25 today to apply for the next 60 years and never get to hunt, which absolutely will happen. There is no magic bullet. My opinion certainly will not be popular with those who have max or near max points, but it also isn’t only to benefit “kids and newbies”. It’s just my opinion, I don’t write any policies or rules so no need for anyone to get too bunched up over it.
  18. Probably should have included trailer chains.

So we should prioritize tags for people who got to hunt when Kaibab any deer tags were OTC and so were elk tags? I love my grandpa but...

I used a scouting package one time. It worked out but I am not sure I would do it again. Honestly, you could just start hiking and scouting right now. Find places 1-2 miles from a road to glass from.

Yeah man, like I said, I don’t need you to agree with me and clearly you don’t know what I am saying so let’s just call it good.

Better odds compared to now. But thanks for trying to follow. I have an ID lifetime license. Apply there when I want to hunt, when I don’t want to I don’t have to buy a stupid point for that adds little value. Still have resident odds. Definitely worth it.

I don’t need you to agree with me. I don't like the idea of creating an illusion that if people just put in long enough they will somehow earn a tag. If we just went random then a small portion of applicants would have lower odds and many more would have better odds. There would be no more “playing the point game” or building points for non-hunters so you could apply as a party. I am sick of all the barriers and games and “strategy articles”. It just advances the commercialization of hunting. I just don’t love it.

If you start applying for a strip tag today with a Hunter's Ed bonus point how many years of "Doing your time" would it take to get a tag?

    22N Late Rifle

Do you own a tripod and decent optics? Can you shoot 400 yds effectively? Can you breakdown an elk on your own and carry a backpack weighing 80 lbs 2-3 miles 5-6 times... or conversely do you have a friend or 3 who are willing to show up and help pack 2-3 miles? In terms of the hunt... the unit isn’t what it used to be. But there are still elk in almost all of it. In that unit there aren’t a ton of places to backpack or go real deep. But there is rough country and that’s where you will find the bulls that time of year. Good luck, keep us posted.
