  1. Costas was on Dan Patrick this week as well and he did a lousy job defending his actions. He kept saying he was reading the article and did not add his comments. He tried babbling about assault rifles, semi-automatics, and so on. I can half way deal with people who have intelligent arguments but it was pretty clear he doesn't know squat about guns and what they do. It is the same as the people who start spewing about "cop killer" bullets but can't tell you what that even means. They don't understand that BP vests dont stop high speed rounds regardless of the kind of bullet. Too many stupid movies showing guns as magic killing machines.

    Wtb Forster coax

goatsie watch the classifieds on the LHR forum the Forster's pop up but go fast. I have an Redding T7 and a Dillon 550 both great presses. You can make great ammo with just about any of the presses if you take the time to do it right. I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years but you dont need a lot to get started. Buy the LHR Reloading video from Shawn Carlock, it is the best and most straight forward instruction I have found and he talks about what you really need so you dont waste your hard earned $. If you have questions feel free to PM me as well.

    barrel life for non magnum?

yep 6mm barrel should last a long time unless it is a wildcat round pushing larger bullets at +3000 fps. If the price is right buy it you can also rebarrel one for not that much if you decide to upgrade to a match quality barrel.

    My Unit # 31 & 32 "SHEEP"!

I was thinking the same thing! I cut mine in two and carried each half about a mile and that was really no fun but never dreamed of trying to carry the entire critter. Crockpot or smoker would be my vote as they are VERY lean and you can screw up the meat pretty easy. Jerky was great my kids devoured it and sausage is good since they mix it with fat as well.

    Off To Hunt A Ram

Good luck! That is a great area enjoy it you only get to make this memory once.
  7. That is fantastic! Get that one mounted for sure. Only been out once this year up on the rim and it was the worst I have seen it with not much flying.
  8. I am going New Zealand also. Followed by stone and dall hunt int Canada. But I really like the idea of a few thousand acres of land all for myself!
  9. I really like my 7mm's, Dakota and RM and they have proven to be great 1000 yd guns from a target perspective. Not planning in shooting critters that far. I have a 300 RUM as well and don't shoot it much any more since it wears you out a little quicker and doesn't get me any huge gains in performance. I did shoot my bighorn with the 300 so it will always be a special gun to me. All that being said if I hade other deer caliber rifle I would go big and do the 338. If you don't have anything in 7mm or .308 yet I would go 7mm. IMHO

    Inconsistency in bullet Projectiles

If you use the 162gr AMAX your loads should be pretty much the same as the starting loads you used for the 168gr VLD's. I use H1000 because it seems to be very consistent and the claimed max from load data is about where I stopped. I know a lot of guys push them a lot harder though. Cartridge : 7 mm Rem. Mag. Inconsistency in bullet Projectiles

The meplat uniformity should not cause an issue like the one you are having. For what it is worth I have meplat trimmers (actually the MCR's in the link above) in a few calibers and dont use them much as I found it made a pretty negligible difference for all the extra work. I know that especially in smaller calibers the twist rate of your barrel can cause the longer berger's to be unstable. We have shot them through 2 .243's and one was okay and the other could not get consistency at various ranges. Berger makes great bullets as do many others in this day and age I dont believe there are many bad bullets being produced, your idea to try a few is probably the best thing you can do. Sounds like you are doing everything else you can. Good luck!

    Camera Suggestions?

The covert Amanda sells is a great little camera, lightweight and the batteries last a really long time. I use the spypoint tiny camera more than any other because I bought quite a few of them at a good price. The spypoint tiny has the best aiming system and is easier to use than pretty much any others I have used. However, I wish I had more of the coverts as well due to the ability to use the metal lock box that is available. Both of these cameras take great pics and batteries will last for months.
  13. We hit a few places around Show Low and it was the worst I have seen it in some time. Not many ducks and a few geese flying around. The NW just got hit with storms so I would guess the next month should get much better. Anyone hit Roosevelt?

    Ethical kill

You lost me? I am pretty sure we are not in any real disagreement. I gave an opinion without trying to get into the various branches, definitions, philosophies, or concepts of ethics and then explained my opinion.

    Ethical kill

Maybe semantics but I definitely think there is a difference between ethical and stupid. Ethics in my mind is when you start heading towards illegal actions since that is where opinion stops and it becomes clear there was wrong doing. I am not saying it is worse or better than stupid! The archery example is probably a violation of both. The long range shooting issue is simply stupid if you have not trained yourself for the shot and the conditions aren't acceptable. I passed last year on the biggest coues of my life at a shot just under 600 yds due to the changing winds in the canyon we were in. I had spent a lot of time practicing and I was very consistent at 700 yds and knew the exact elevation to dial the scope in and take a shot. I really did not shoot because at that distance I knew I could get closer anyway so why would I risk sending the deer running to the next zip code. I will say there is a difference between archery and rifle as the margin for error is so small in archery. Also, at long ranges for rifles there are some factors working in your favor such as the deer having no adrenaline rush or reason to run. They also seem to die and not move far when shot from long range or they drop like a load of bricks, probably mostly due to bullet angle. As for knowing if there is another hunter in the area most of the time you are behind glass for so long you know if someone is around as well as the deer knowing they are there if they are close. People bring it up all the time but I have never heard of an example of someone being shot this way. Now a guy shooting into bushes or running deer, that seems to happen more often. Think about what would have to happen to be hit by a rifle shot from long range, someone would have to miss by 50 or more yards, since there is no way another hunter is standing next to the deer during rifle season it is really not much of a concern. It is a bit of a boogey man issue for those that dont agree with LR hunting not any kind of reality.

    Long Range Dink 1,243 yards

Great shot! Ignore the complainers, if you have never practiced and shot long range with a purpose built rifle you have no clue. It sounds like you know what you are doing, know your rifle, and I am pretty sure you would have made the hike to find the deer I would have because practicing long range turns you into an optimist since you know what you are capable of. I would be willing to bet more deer are wounded at short range or in brush than at long range by people who have practiced for those conditions. When you practice at those ranges you are patient, have clarity of mind to know all of the conditions around you, and you wait for the right shot. Can you miss sure thing, but pretty much all of the deer I have seen that were not recovered were close not far shots. All that being said that is a long shot, as long as my longest practice sessions on targets. Great shot!

  21. Can we make this a sticky! We can start a CWT.com dictionary/wiki
  22. I think the 25-06 is a great round for coues but I am not sure I would try and push it past 500 yds since you just can't get heavy enough bullets through it keep the energy up IMHO. For inside of 500 it is great. I say buy it if it is a good deal. At some point you may still want a varmint specific rifle and a long range rifle... or two... or three...or

Wow! I have never weighed a primer in my life. I do all the other steps you mentioned as well but have never used solvent. Have been kicking around getting a steel media tumbler.
