It was cheaper to buy an actual 22 (Ruger Wrangler) then a starter gun when I started my pup.

Yup, then when you are done with it, you can sell it and get most of your money back.  Heritage or Ruger Wrangler.

Yup and you can buy .22 blanks in different strengths at Home Depot.
