Ft. Huachuca Coues

Recommended Posts

I drew the late December coues tag on Ft. Huachuca that starts Friday.

I won’t be able to make it out until the following week.

Unfortunately I’ve never hunted there and will not have had any time to scout. Not even sure if it’s allowed.

Anyone have any pointers for hunting on base?

That tag is only good on post correct? It's a good tag either way.  There is a lot of deer on post.  Shoot me a text 520-376-9283

Steve,

I am local here. 2nd week of this hunt is best as training activities will be low, thus more open areas. Download Fort Huachuca off Avenza maps (isportsman) if you haven’t already. Call or shoot a text tomorrow and we can discuss some of the areas that produce decent deer. 520-two six six-1312.

Its a very high pressure hunt. You will most likely encounter a lot of very frustrating human behavior that will make your hunt hard. There are also a lot of extra rules that make it more complicated than hunting off post. In the past few years Ft. Huachcua deer hunts have become much harder than they used to be. That being said success is still possible and there are a lot of good bucks on post. There is no where on Fort Huachuca that coues deer don't live. Scout people not deer. Figure out where hunters aren't going and hunt there. Be fluid with your plans because what ever plan you make will probably be ruined by somebody doing something stupid. Ive had a lot of success on Fort Huachuca in the past. Being out when nobody else is was always the key to tagging out for me. Bad weather days are great. If you play it right and find yourself out there on a day with low hunting pressure you've got a good chance of seeing some awesome deer. Get the Avenza App and map. If you bow hunt try the early archery hunt sometime.

Does the late Dec hunt have a lot of tags? I figured it would be minimal.

80 late Dec coues tags with 10 any antler muzzy tags so 90 total for the late hunt. You have to sign in every day to the area you want to hunt and they only allow a certain amount of hunters in each area. Some areas only allow as little as 2 hunters at any given time. Majority of the areas allow anywhere from 3-5 hunters. The good/popular areas fill up fast so you gotta be quick to sign in.

Do you sign in at the gate for the area you want to hunt or use an app in addition to physically signing in when you enter the base?

You will be fine. That unit is a gold mine. I hunted it for 5 years and seen tons of deer. My wife killed a 104” deer on post a few years back. If you want, I can help you out. PM me and I’ll give you some more advice. I wouldn’t also recommend buying a lion tag. They are EVERYWHERE!!!

It’s done on their website now. It used to be in person or over the phone.
