Below is a list of animals that was compiled for an application for the Weatherby Big Game Hunting and Conservation Trophy. I'm writing the memoirs of the hunter who shot all these. The numbers at right of each line are SCI record book scores. I've written books for seven Weatherby winners, and this list is typical of the hunting these guys have done. Their trophy rooms are something to see. Most of his mounts are lifesize mounts. I'd like to have just half of what he's spent in taxidermy fees. This particular guy has a 36x60' trophy room with 18' ceilings, PLUS a 6,000 square foot museum that's open to the public. Not all of his trophies are on this list.

The interesting thing about all of the hunters whose books I've written -- with two exceptions -- is that they were not born wealthy. They all started with nothing, and with hard work and luck made fortunes after going off on their own. The exceptions were both Iranians. One came from a family who manufactured cars and farm equipment; the other was the brother of the Shah of Iran.

 

All except one -- C.J. McElroy, the founder of Safari Club International -- put themselves through college and went on from there. McElroy left school at age 11 and ran away from home. He self-educated himself by reading everything he could find, including everything in an entire set of encylopedias, and traveling.

I wasn't saying that they weren't self made by any means.. Almost all of those guys were..and McElroy has been a long standing "hero" of mine since I was a small boy.. he is the pinnicle of self-made. I own most of the books either written by, or written for these guys and have tried to do my best to emulate them since I took up big game hunting at the age of 9!!

 

But one has to admit it takes a TON of extra cash and time to pull off a hunting list such as the likes of those guys.. What I would give to be able to hang with them!!

 

Money talks and I wish I had LOTS more of it!!

The guy who collected the animals on the list above is the hardest working and nicest fellow you will ever meet, and he made his money by outfitting, guiding and booking other hunters on hunts around the world. I cannot say more because he hasn't decided whether I will share the byline or remain anonymous when the book is published (it's his call; I really don't care).

 

Hunting is his entire life after God and family. In his book he tells about leaving the tracks of a huge bull elephant and returning to camp when he realized it was the Sabbath. He took at least one member of his family (but usually more) on every one of his hunts around the world -- and his kids and wife also hunted on those trips, although they didn't take as many animals. Two of his children now are full-time guides in Alaska.

 

Most of his hunts were done during his off season -- from December 1 to April 1. The money came from living frugally and hard work. He tithes 10% of his income before taxes to his church, puts another 10% into his savings account, plows whatever is needed into his business, and lives and hunts on what's left after taxes.

 

He also didn't do all of his hunting in just a few years. He's several years younger than I am, which would make him 69 or 70, and has been hunting since age 12. He made his first trip to Africa 30 years ago, and kept returning until he had collected all of its game animals. Ditto with the other continents.

 

Incidentally, McElroy was my mentor, and was largely responsible for all of the hunting I was able to do off of this continent after I started working for him in 1983. I was fortunate to accompany Mac to Zambia on his last safari, and he was with me when I shot the lion I use for my avatar. He was a controversial guy, but he did things few can imagine doing. I am proud to have helped him preserve his stories.

Thank you. It was a privilege to spend weeks interviewing those men and helping them preserve their stories. Among my fondest memories is sitting around a campfire in Zambia and listening to Mac talk about things we couldn’t put in his books.

 

The only big time international hunter I did not enjoy being with was Prince Abdorreza. I spent 24 nine- to ten-hour days interviewing him, and ate lunch with him every day, and he still insisted that I call him “your highness.” The only time he allowed the barrier between us to drop briefly was when we were in Reno, signing my books about him at an SCI convention, and he said something he thought was funny and slapped my knee.

 

The book I wrote about him, “Royal Quest,” is pricey at $325 for the trade edition, but do you have it? It and Hubert Thummler’s “Wind in My Face” are my favorites of all the hunting memoirs I’ve written. I also liked my “The History of Safari Club International.” The committees that had to approve the manuscript made some changes I didn’t like, but I was pleased to see they left intact what I said about how Mac was treated after the cub fired him.

 

I was fortunate to have done a lot of hunting on other continents before prices went crazy. For example, when I first went to Africa in 1983, a 14-day safari in Zimbabwe’s famed Matesi including trophy fees for buffalo, sable, kudu and three or four smaller antelopes was $3,995, plus $1,100 airfare to Vic Falls. The same hunt would start at $20,000 now.

I have both that you mentioned, Bill.. Wind in my face is a wonderful book.. Thummler is a sheep hunting maniac!!

I own the History of SCI as well. I'll be picking up your own memoir, "60 Years A Hunter", as soon as it comes out onto the press!

 

You must be a man with ALOT of patience!! Dealing with a ROYAL you know what like that for that long would have worn me thin in about 10 minuntes!!

I always got the feeling that he didnt even really enjoy hunting.. I felt like most of the time he was just "going through the motions" because of his status allowed him to hunt species and places where no one else could ever go.. It was almost as he was "working", no fun in it at all.

He had nothing else to do. To his credit, he did establish a modern game department and staffed it with U.S. trained Iranian wildlife biologists. He also established Iran's first game reserves and parks, ended poaching and educated his countrymen about the value of wildlife, and brought all of the middle-eastern countries together to create a migratory bird treaty similar to the one between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. After his brother's regime fell, he set up a wildlife foundation that still exists after his death. It not only helps finance wildlife conservation work worldwide, it also contributes toward pro-hunting international causes.

 

My problem with Abdorreza was his refusal to believe he was no longer a prince. That extended into his hunting. If you read between the lines about his last African buffalo hunt you will see what I mean. He felt someone of his status "deserved" a 50-inch buffalo and was unhappy when he didn't shoot it. The same with one of his elephant hunts, when the bull elephant he shot wasn't a 100-pounder.
