Small Coues buck with skin disease

Recommended Posts

He's just one tough buck. Look how many times he's been shot.

I shot a mulie buck about 12 years ago that had warts all over him. I wasn't sure what the crap it was so I took him into the local DWR office. A biologist came out and cut a couple off to sample but they were just warts like cattle get. I was worried to even touch the thing though...

Have a mulie on camera on the rim that has something like that with a giant patch of it on his hip.

Looks like papilloma. Nasty. Nasty. Nasty.

They do appear to be infectious fibropapillomas. They are not contagious and are confined to the skin. They can grow to be fairly large (pancake size) but come off with the skin, and the underlying tissues are not affected. They do grow and eventually drop off. Other mammals may eat them and become infected that way. Deer are usually infected by eating those that are shed by rabbits or hares, but they will also occasionally eat those that are shed by other deer.

I've had a couple, this is probably the worst example I have seen. Looks crazy

That is nasty! I wouldn't touch that thing at all, even if they tell me it isn't contagious.
