Scalies for the first time!

Recommended Posts

I was able to make it down south this weekend and connect on some scaled quail for the first time. It was a lot of fun. I think those things like to run more than gambles do. Very beautiful birds. I saw a lot of waterfowl as well but don't have my migratory bird stamp or federal stamp. Here are some pics of the birds.

Glad you were able to finally make a trip down there. I know it's been on your bucket list for a while. Cool birds!

Coues assassin anywhere around Tucson in the 3500 to 4500 elevations is scaled quail country. It seems they like that grassy mesquite country best. I found most of my birds in the 70% grass 30% mesquite/ocotillo/prickly pear. They do like to run which makes it difficult to find them in that taller grass. They do not respond to a quail call like gambles do but blowing into a hawk call will cause them to freeze up and not run as much. Good luck and PM me if you needed more advice.
