Sorry but the fat lady is warming up. -
That bull in the first video that is being kept away from the herd looks like he has a hernia or injury on his left side. Pretty large lump. Thanks for sharing

Not to change subject but this may be the year of the squirrel. Lived here all 54 years of my life and don't ever recall seeing so many squirrels as this year. Coconino forest is loaded this year. Go for squirrel if the turkey hunting is not working out. I agree, this is a great time to be out in the woods. Good Luck and have fun.

My friend who lives near bison ranch in Heber says the elk are keeping him up all night. Was near Strawberry this evening and I heard them sounding off around 6:30 pm.

I guess you can always hunt with a crossbow? I had an archery antelope hunt in 5B 8 or 9 years ago and there was a guy hunting, or should I say shooting multiple antelope, with a crossbow. When I talked to him in the field why he was using a crossbow he showed me a little white medical tape on his pinky finger and said he was disabled. I can't remember exactly but I know 7 was the number. I don't know if he shot 6 and killed the 7th or shot 7 and killed the 8th. I reported it to G&F & they contacted me a few weeks later and said he was legit. The time I saw him shoot one it was 90 plus yard shot and ran off wounded. Seriously, I hope you heal up real quick and this is a non-issue come hunting season.

My father once received two tags for the same hunt.

Here is a list of people who have completed the trail. My Dad completed it in 2009. His name is George Hay http://www.aztrail.org/finishers.html I think he told me he rode across the Grand Canyon 7 different times. Once for himself and the rest to help others. He made a ton of friends on that trail. Even though I don't ride anymore I am glad there are still places where only boots and hooves can go. Once it is gone, it will be gone forever. There are plenty of other places for wheeled sports.

Sorry, but I am going to derail this topic. It doesn't look like it is going anywhere anyway. I was at the bowhunter happening at Mormon Lake a couple weeks ago. I noticed very few people looking or shopping for hunting merchandise and accessories. However, the t-shirt and hat clothing tents were pretty busy. Seems like if a fella comes ups with a "catchy" name or slogan and especially if it appeals to the ladies, you might do pretty well. Hunting and outdoors fashion seems to be where the money is. As a hunter, you are probably only going to buy one quiver or release but you will have multiple hats and shirts. Just my observation

One of my favorite places and where I cut my teeth back in 1978. The unit has changed in the last 20 years but I would recommend you hunt the same places you hunted before. 20 years ago was towards the beginning of of the downward spiral of this unit. The good news is that it is making a mild comeback with the reduced tags and new management plan in place for 3 years or so. The predators still have a major influence on the numbers in the unit but I would say the hunt will be comparable to what you experienced 20 years ago. We liked to camp along walnut creek but that was because we had horses and there was water and a horse pen nearby. The area between camp wood and walnut creek work station was always my favorite place to hunt. Especially on the east side of road towards the rolling hills. Long story short - it was up then went way down and now on the way back up. Good Luck!

When my father retired 17 years ago that was one of his goals. Over a 12-13 year period he completed it on horseback 4 or 5 times and was even a trail steward. He helped many people along the way. My father passed away 2 years ago. Maybe these people can help you? https://arizonatrail.wordpress.com/ Good Luck

It's discussions such as this that remind me why I am not a trophy hunter. I am just a plain ol' ordinary hunter and I do for no other reason than to satisfy the inner hunter in me. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

If people stop putting down choices 3-5 there would probably be some decent tags leftover and you would not burn your points to get one. JMO

Since you are asking, this is what I would do. 12a west late first choice and 12a west early 2nd choice. Do this until you draw one of the hunts which is most likely 1-2 years away. I have had both hunts and the biggest buck I have ever seen was on the early hunt. Both are really fun to be on and really reminds me of what a real western hunt was like 30-40 years ago. Good Luck

My daughter went to Creighton University in Omaha Neb. It is a private school and tuition is the same for everyone resident or non-resident. I called G&F and they told me she could still apply as a resident if she was a full-time student. I only bought her points while she was gone so we never had an actual tag. Now she lives in NM and I wish I would have purchased her a lifetime license before she left. I recommend you call G&F and get your questions answered.

Look at her big ol' belly. Looks like she was going to drop at any moment. I always thought they stopped growing at end of July or beginning of August even though the last month of growing is not very apparent. The last two weeks of August is when I see the majority rub their horns hard.

(Military service was the only time i was denied, but I figured a way around that after the first year hahaha) Been told after hiring-on "You can't take the time off, we are to busy" "I'm the boss and I dont get time off" etc... sorry for your luck Boss-man, but I'm taking deer season, if I have a job when it's over and i come back may be a different story, but I was looking for a job when I walked through your doors anyway... Life is to short to not Hunt..." One-shot When I decided to become a High School teacher I knew there would be some trade offs. I love my job but it sucks when it comes to taking time off for hunting. I have always been jealous of people who take the entire season off. I tell my friends, I would gladly trade my 2 months off in the summer for 2 weeks off in the fall. I usually try to apply for hunts that take place during long weekends, thanksgiving or Christmas break. The district I work in gives us 10 discretionary days a year. If we want to take 2 or more consecutive days we need to get signed permission from principal. He has been supportive and understands hunting is my passion but I don't abuse this. He once told be the first 5 are a gimmie after that it is a case by case bases. As an educator I feel guilty when I am away from my classes because I know what happens when we have a sub. I work with a few teachers who use all their discretionary days each year and technically that is their right but as a professional educator I try to be in the classroom as much as I can. This year I drew an early archery bull tag. I will hunt the first friday-sunday, go back to work and then hunt the last sat-thursday. If I kill early I will come back to work sooner and cancel days off. Only 1 time in my 21 years of teaching have I requested for an entire week off. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. On the drive up I got kidney stones and my buddy had to take me to the emergency room at flagstaff hospital. I spent the entire first day of my hunt in that hospital. They wanted me to stay but I said get me out of here because I have an elk hunt. I did not pass the stones until Thursday morning and it was not a pretty sight. For about 6 days I would be good for a few hours and then they would shift and I would be in excruciating pain anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours. My fellow teachers told me that is what happens when you request time off. I also agree that life is too short and everyone should try to squeeze as much out of it as they can. Good Hunting! John -

If you got the time & energy, go for it. Each persons circumstances are different. I know my job would not allow me the time off. Have fun and make the most of it. -
Tough situation all the way around. You did what was most important and took care of our family. I believe everyone would have made the phone call to the fishing outfit to see if they could refund due to the circumstances. You tried, didn't work out and now time to move on. Paying for something you never received is a hard pill to swallow. A situation like this reminds me of why I supported G&F and there tag surrender program where you could reclaim your bonus points. Stuff like this happens all the time and in the past people were just out of luck. Now there is a way to recoup your points with point guard. Life happens and it is nice to know in some cases there are ways to lesson the sting of an unfortunate situation. Glad to hear your family is safe and sound.
