    What binos?

I take my usual setup of tripod 12x50s and spotter. I like to use javelina hunting/season to also do a little deer scouting.
  2. Like I mentioned above, I do a break in on my rifles. I'm far from an expert, but my opinion tends to fall into the I'd rather be safe than sorry area. Like many have said, opinions vary a lot on how necessary a break in procedure is. But here is my thought process. I see all of my rifles as a long term investment. I hope to have all of my rifles for many years and pass them down to my kids. Anything that might help prolong the long-term life of my rifles is a plus. I'm a bit OCD, so if there is a chance that I can do something to improve my accuracy, even to a small degree, I'm usually going to do it. I love to shoot, not just shooting, but the whole process of hanging out with family and friends, cleaning and caring for my guns, reloading, etc. So the break in process just gives my one more excuse to do something I enjoy doing. I don't see it as a waste of time, even if it doesn't actually do anything, much like most hobbies.
  3. I've used this method I found on Montana X-Tremes website several years ago with several rifles. Good process, but you don't necessarily need to use their products. Not a quick process by any means, but seems to work well. http://www.montanaxtreme.com/recommended-cleaning-procedures/ PROFESSIONAL NEW BARREL BREAK-IN PROCEDURE FIRST 10 SHOTS After each shot: Use two consecutive patches of Montana X-Treme Copper Killer 50 B.M.G. to wet the bore. Wet a Montana X-Treme Nylon Brush with Copper Killer 50 B.M.G. and scrub the bore 10 times. Wet the bore with a patch of Copper Killer 50 B.M.G. Saturate a patch with Montana X-Treme Copper Cream. Work back and forth in the bore five or six times. Remove Copper Cream with consecutive patches of Montana X-Treme Copper Killer 50 B.M.G. Finish with two consecutive dry patches. To further protect against copper buildup add a small amount of Montana X-Treme Bore Conditioner Oil to a patch and run through the bore two times. Insure that you do not leave a heavy residue of Bore Conditioner Oil in the barrel. NEXT 20 SHOTS Repeat above procedure after five consecutive shots.

    Saur 100 XT

Is that an old add? They are showing $419 regular price right now on the website. I see the $100 off rebate but not the $50 instant rebate. I got this ad in the mail yesterday. It is also currently up on their website.

    Saur 100 XT

What is your budget? I have several buddies who have bought Ruger Predators in 6.5 Creedmore and everyone of them rave about the performance. You can get into one of those for sub $500. Also, I can't speak to these rifles as I have never owned or shot one, but this looks to be a heck of a deal at Cabelas with great reviews. $269 with the rebate.

    Saur 100 XT

I can't speak to the Saur, but I recently picked up a Ruger Precision in 6.5 creedmore, I needed something that would go small (stock length) for my petite 10 year old daughter to use. It is a heavy sucker, but for a factory gun, the accuracy is ridiculous. I'll also add that every Tikka I've owned has been a solid sub MOA shooter. Most under half MOA once I got the load worked out.

    Specific Spotting Scope Advice

Also, like someone else said, you really don't use a spotter zoomed out all the way. You start to lose some clarity at a certain point.

    Specific Spotting Scope Advice

I have the newer version of the Vortex Razor 85 straight spotter. Prior to that I had a Vortex Viper 65 straight spotter. Like you, I know the Swarovski 95 is exponentially better, but it isn't in the budget and I have had a lot of Vortex products over the years with great results. Here is my opinion: The 65 viper was great, but light gathering in low light, and even decent light, wasn't getting me what I wanted. The 85, while larger, still fits into my same pack compartments and the size/weight difference really has not been noticeable to pack around. The light gathering however is a huge improvement in just about all light situations. I recently took my brother-in-law on his first hunt, a coues hunt. I found a buck bedded at around 500 yards under a bush that was virtually invisible. All you could see was the black on his nose, and that only when he moved it by chewing. We were able to keep an eye on him for a couple of hours till he got up. Without the spotter, he was almost invisible, even with my 12x50 Swaro ELs. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.
  9. I had my fingers crossed for some turkey hunts out east that same weekend. Doesn't look like they are going to pan out, so I just picked up 2 adult and 3 youth tickets. Bringing the whole clan this year! This will be the first banquet for my youngest two (8 and 10 years old), should be interesting!!! Shelvin and Ammon, you guys are coming right?

    Keying padlocks

I imagine it would cost more to re-key than to just but new locks.

    TIKKA 3 7MM RIFLE ******** SOLD ********

I bought an identical rifle (model and caliber) from a member on here a few years ago as a backup rifle. It consistently shoots 1/2 MOA or better. Good deal here.
  15. The purchase spot on the website looks to be down, but as of Tuesday night it was not yet sold out. However, reserved and corporate tables are about gone if you are looking for one. Good chance this may sell out in the next couple of weeks, so don't delay if you want to get tickets. The number of prizes (especially rifles and some pretty fancy ones) looks to be higher than ever, Should be another great one this year.

    Simply awesome Javelina Youth hunt

Maybe it makes me a terrible dad, but I always have a lion tag in my pocket and my son doesn't get one, even when my son is the one doing the hunting. I've been after a lion for a long time, and my son knows that if we ever glass one up, he is passing over the rifle. Him not having a tag eliminates any confusion or question about that . So for now, he doesn't need to a lion tag. Once I finally get one that may change. I don't feel too guilty about it since I'm the one footing the bill for all of his hunts anyway, and he seems to draw everything he puts in for while I never draw a thing.

    Side by side mechanic

Definitely stay away from the big name dealers! When it is something I can't do myself, I go to Southwest ATV out in Queen Creek, the shop owner's name is Jake Peters. He is an avid hunter and really good honest guy. His daughter is also friends with my son. He also sells archery and optics equipment out of his shop (primarily PSE and Vortex). http://www.southwestatv.com/ Crossroads are Ironwood and Ocotillo 480-882-3626

I hate to ask for help, but...

Sorry, I also have no knowledge of those areas, but will add what we have learned. Our "prime times" for seeing pigs this time of year, and especially this year, tends to be in the 9:00 AM- 10:30 AM window. They don't seem to like to get up and move around until it gets a little warmer and then they like to get in the sun (east and south east slopes are good). Then we usually find them bedding around 11:00. Look for piled up lumps that could easily be mistaken for rocks in the shade up and under trees. Then again around 4:00 PM till dark they tend be get active and moving again. Good luck, sorry I can't be of more help. It took my son and I several years without success to get them figured out, each time getting a little closer. But once we broke through we have had back to back to back successful hunts.

    Simply awesome Javelina Youth hunt

That's a great day and experience. To bad you didn't have a lion tag, but good for you for doing the right thing and teaching your son right. A lot of people would have shot the cat and then headed into town for a tag.

    Elk transplant to west virginia

I love everything about this! Restoring elk populations to their native ranges is conservation at its finest. The fact that they are taking them out of Arizona says great things about the elk in our state. We have very strong populations and the healthiest elk in the country, free of the diseases elk are experiencing in many other states. 50 cows an 10 bulls are a drop in the bucket of what we have in this state. But if it cost me an extra year before I drew a tag, I'd be happy to do it. I hope this current program is successful and continues to expand to other states.

    Youth Javelina Double

LOL, the rocks were only going 30 yards and not making enough noise to bother the pigs (am I still allowed to call them pigs in here).

State's Worst Javelina Hunter, title remains intact!

We knocked a couple down out in 37b yesterday. They are there, but the lack of moisture has changed their patterns.

    Thinking of moving

I lived in Idaho Falls as a boy. Great small city and fantastic area for the outdoors enthusiast. Typing this is making me think I need to plan another trip up to the South Fork of the Snake to get after those browns.
