Ethics of stealing your own trail cam?

Recommended Posts

I forgot to bring my key to the lock I put on my trail cam this weekend. I landed up having to steal it back from myself. Fortunately the owner had strapped it to a rotten mesquite branch, so all I had to do was break the branch apart and pull the cable locked camera up along it until it slid off the end.

My question is, since I forgot the key, should I have left the locked camera in place? Its never good to steal, especially from yourself.

;)

It would have sucked for someone to watch you do it, especially one who has had a cam stolen, and then try to explain the situation you were in.

I once had one of my cameras locked to the base of a ponderosa pine with a python cable lock. I lost the key and had to drive back into Payson to buy a pair of bolt cutters to go back and get it. A few months later I found the key.

I've scratched my name into the base of a few of mine, that way I can later prove that they are mine if the situation arises.

I also like the name thing, because if another theif steals it they'll have a hard time explaining to someone else who the person is with their name on the cam!
