Elk Rut Update

Why do you guys think the rifle/muzzy hunts will be better? Is the rut picking up intensity, Or you thinking it’s been so bad eventually it must pick up?

Same as now.  Either the nutrition is not there or there is a lot less elk.

Granted it was my first time in the best unit in the state, I watched a couple great bulls push cows for the majority of Friday and Saturday and they wouldn't leave their side, surely breeding. Not even one satellite bull around, just ragorns and spikes, which were ran off the herd if they let out even the faintest of bugles.

These bulls never made a peep or allowed a bugle in the herd, yet I talked with the cows for hours. It was strange. Bugling and/or raking just pushed the herd a few hundred yards and they would settle back down, then we would try again. The hunter took a small bull we called in with cow calls yesterday.

It's the same every year I have hunted Arizona since 76. Colorado has been about the same. It's all about the girls and when they go into estrus.  You can't  set your watch by it. I see as much of the rut when I squirrel hunt in some years. 

The rut whether deer or elk changes every year and nobody has figured it out.

Doesn’t answer my question. Why do the guys out there now, think it will be better in a week. Is it trending up or is wishful thinking

That’s what I’m thinking. If they’re not cranking on September 20th, they won’t be cranking.
 

There might be some good days here and there but if it’s as bad as guys are saying, it probably won’t get noticeably better than it is now. 
 

im going to 22n next weekend it’s gonna be so poverty. Poverty rut, hunting poverty size bulls. Nightmare

I’ve had some experience on hunts where bulls were rutting harder in mid October than late September.

You think they’re gonna do that this year? Was the rut getting better as your hunt went on?

Yeah, probably. We were seeing new bulls everyday. The big bulls’ harems were growing as well.

Stupid cows kept changing the program and saving that suckers life. Oh well. Out of time.
