Savage 300WSM build/gunsmith needed

Recommended Posts

Instead of buying new stuff I thought I'd freshen up a few I already have. First off, I'm looking to get my Savage 116 300wsm fitted with a Proof barrel. It doesn't appear they make pre fits so I guess I'll need a blank? Not sure how it goes, I've never re barreled a bolt gun. I'm looking to get this done ASAP as I need to re do load development for a WY hunt this fall. Any help would be appreciated on how to go about this. Thanks.

Axis Works  or  Phoenix custom rifles can do the job. Eric at Axis Works might have a lead time of a bit depending on work.  Usually  Keith is a week  or two at Phoenix.  I've used  bolth on builds with  great results

I am currently shooting berger 168 VLD's that I don't care for. I have always recovered what I shot, but luckily they were all lung or heart shots as there was zero expansion or blood trail. I want to use 180-185 grain pills with the new setup. For those that know anything about barrels, would this be it for what I'm looking for? I know its just a blank but I've heard they are hard to come by and this is in stock.

For a 300 Wiz I'd go 9 twist if not 8 twist for those 180-190 pills. At some point you may even want to try 200-220 with the 8 twist. The big issue will be a throat length for the chamber to accommodate your magazine length and those 180-190 bullets. Make sure to discuss this with your smith. Think about where you want to seat your bullets if you will be handloading. Also I would recommend a 24 or 26 inch barrel for the 300 WSM. Those slow burning powders that it takes to propel the heavier bullets burn more efficiently in 24 or 26 inch barrels. Good efficiency equals better extreme spreads and tighter groups especially at longer ranges.
