Piggie success in 36B

Recommended Posts

This is my '06 pig! We got in late and slept in just a bit on Sat., which was my "opening day" for pigs in 36B. I saddled up the quad and headed for my glassing points. Stopping at my first one I glassed up a herd before I even got off the bike. The pigs were spooked and I watched where they went over a ridge. I stashed the quad and took off running to cut down the distance while they were out of sight. I went up and into the same canyon they went into and relocated the herd of ten. I dropped all my gear off and started a 200 yrd stalk. The pigs were huddled under a mesquite fighting over the little shade it provided. I got to within 30 yrds and just stood there watching and enjoying the moment. I was trying to pick out the biggest one and after about 20 minutes they got up and started feeding off. I found the one I wanted and let it fly. I have bright cresting and vanes on my arrows and could see it fly center mass through the pig. There was alot of grass between us but I felt I made a good shot. My pig hauled out of there while the others fed around me at less than 30 yrds for a couple more minutes. I then snuck over and picked up my arrow, NOTHING!? It was dry and absolutely no sign! I just passed up every other pig thinking I stuck this one! I tracked him to double check and nothing. I think I shot through hair I guess. I then tried to locate the rest of the herd and found them farther down the canyon and snuck directly across from them bedded. I found the biggest and it was laying quartered away at 48 yrds on a rock ledge, and thumped him! He went less than 20 yrds before hittin the dirt! This is my 12th archery pig and I still get as pumped hunting them as I did on my first, they're a blast to hunt with a bow! I found a nice coues shed when packing out and it just topped off a great day! My buddy Craig had a pig tag as well so on Sun. we hit it hard, glassing several nice coues bucks and a huge herd of pigs that were kicked up by Border patrol as they escorted about 15 UDA's out of a canyon! We watched where the pigs went and figured they bedded. We drove as close as we could, after BP left, and hiked in. We sat down to try and relocate the herd when standing right where we thought they would be was another mexican fella! B) He was just looking around and then took off walking. We never found another pig. As we were strapping down our packs at the quads right at dark, 4 more UDA's came walking by in the wash, heading SOUTH? I yelled to them sayin that they were going the wrong way but to keep on going! They did and in a hurry too  The coues rut is still weak down there but noticeable, the Mulies in the northern part of the unit are goin ballistic and we spent our last day watching some huge bucks ruttin' around, just too far for stalks or not enough light. The wind was to bad to try digiscopeing the mulies but I did get some coues pic's. The big one is bigger than the pic's look because the ocotillo behind him hides his length, His G2's are incredible and so are his beams, just has short G3's compared to his G2's, great buck though! He was about 3/4 of a mile out and the smaller buck was about 1/2 mile, both using 60 power for the pic's. Thanks for the B-day topic and reply's, that was really cool! Thanks JIM

sounds like a good hunt. both you pig pictures are very nice, its always nice to see some pictures that even a non hunter could appreciate.

also what I do with my arrow if I don't see blood is give it a sniff. I have had an arrow pass thru a deer that apeared to be clean, but did smell, found the deer 60 yrd away in the thick stuff.
