It is a bit slow for this forum for being so close to archery elk season!!

Everybody must be out scouting. LOL

Here is a few pictures of Unit 27 and some of the Wallow fire.

Got that right.

Those are some nice bulls.

it looks like their antlers are darker than what I'm seeing in other units. is it because of the different nutrients, soot, etc, in the soil from the fire?

Probably becuase they are rubbing their antlers against burnt trees. Saw some last year that were black as night for that very reason.

Yes I believe it is due to all the burnt trees that the horns are so dark. My bull from last year was real dark which I really liked. Also I ocasionally see elk look up with completely black faces from the remaining soot. My shoes are real black when I return from a hike also. Guess it will take a few more years for the forest soot to clean up.

Some of the dark color is from the burnt trees but most of it is

the lighting. I took the picture in the late afternoon when the sun was geting low.

If you are able to zoom in look at the center bulls' 2nd point on his left antler

it goes on forever!! But is is hard to see because it is "blonde" in color matching the grass

from the way the sun was hitting it. Also ther was no rubbing going on because I took

the picture July 12th.

Just over 4 weeks!!

I cant wait :D

The music has started!!! Got into 3 aggressively bugling bulls today with the cows quacking their appreciation.
