Old powder

Recommended Posts

There seems to be two schools of thought old powder: 1) it is fine as long as it has been kept sealed, 2) it looses some of its pop after a few years.

What are the thoughts on this?

As long as it stayed dry its ok.i have shot powder that was eighty years old with good results.i would shoot the first five at min loads just as a test.

One persons experience:

The imr4350 cans I had been working through that were from the early 70's had slightly higher ~100 fps velocities in a 7x57 than the new jug I bought with the same charge. The load I had with the old powder is also more accurate than anything ive made with the new stuff  These were stored in a garage here in Phx. Other old powders I have used performed as expected, but I did not have anything to compare it to besides published data.

I shoot 20+ year old powder regularly that has been stored in garages the whole time with no problems.
