Bedding a cheap stock??

Recommended Posts

Hello wondering if bedding a cheap stock will help accuracy? I have a savage 12 fv that shot really well before I took it all the way apart to clean and can’t get it to shoot as tight of groups after putting it back together, wondering if bedding it will help?

Action screw torque is crucial in tupperware stocks.

I have only bedded one polymer 10 stock and it did help, but it was relatively stout to begin with.

If yours is one of the really flimsy stocks, with the bedding effort involved, I'd consider an upgrade. That said, bedding can't hurt and could make good practice for a future bedding job on a better stock.

What did you torque it to when you put it back together?

Anything over about 30 in/lbs will start smushing plastic is what I have found. Savage had some really soft stocks for a while.

Could be that it just needs fouled back in after cleaning. Also ensure that your rear tang is free floated after putting it back together. Anything behind the rear action screw shouldn't touch for best results on a Savage. Like said before, bedding never hurts but those Savage tuperware stocks are notoriously bad.

I have floated the tang I’ve shot it about 30 times and it’s shooting better but it was shooting really well before I took it apart I started at 15 inch pounds and went up in 5 pound increments shooting 3 shot groups and 30 is what it shoots the best at but it’s still not shooting like before
