Can someone walk me through this.  Please treat me like I’m the dumbest person you know.  My son wants to do the youth hunt next year.  Which to my understanding he can do otc??  Secondly I’d like to potentially get a tag at some point. Is there a draw?  The regs confuse me on this a bit.

There are actually two draws for Javelina. The one you're looking for is the spring draw in October for hunts in Jan and Feb of 2027. There is a fall draw for javelina but it is youth only so your son can apply for that and hunt this fall. You can apply your kid for both. The OTC options aren't great so I would just apply for the draws. It won't take long to draw.

How old is your son. Reason I ask my kid is 9 but turns 10 right before the hunt and AZGF said he SOL and can not apply.

That's not true, if that's what was said. He can def apply if he turns 10 before the hunt. But he cant apply for a bonus point only until he turns 10.

They told me she needed a hunting license to apply, and at 9 years old she can not have a hunting license?

I don’t think there’s a minimum age for buying a license.  I have friends who bought their kid a lifetime when they were born..,

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it. Very possible I was given bad info from the department, wouldn't be the first time.

She can have a hunting license at 9. It's just not valid for big game until she is 10.

Yeah you got bad intel. The customer service people at AZGFD are not law enforcement or policy setters. They are cashiers. Most of them don’t have any idea what the rules are and word of mouth policy runs rampant without any fact checking.

You can apply for hunts for which you will be 10 on the start date.

For the OP, your son can apply twice a year for javelina. The next opportunity will be in May for youth only hunts that occur in the fall. The next opportunity to apply will be in October for hunts that occur in Jan-March. He can apply for any hunt,  but the youth only hunts have a few advantages.

If you are new to hunting there are many great organizations that help mentor young and new hunters. You might consider connecting with one of them at a camp.
