small caliber rifle

Recommended Posts

I am toying around with getting a rifle that would be fun and inexpensive to shoot. Last night I was researching 17 hmr and 22 wmr on a different forum. One post said it would be cheaper to shoot something like a 22-250 if you reloaded your own bullets. I don’t know how accurate that statement is, but it made me start considering other small calibers. I know 22lr is the cheapest ammo, but I have already been there and done that.

What is your favorite small caliber rifle? Do you agree that reloading a small centerfire caliber would be comparable in price to buying 17 hmr ammo? Thanks for the opinions.

Maybe price would be close but u would have to take the time to load it. I have a 17hmr and love it!! 12 dollars for 50 and you don't need ear plugs! Also the 17hmr is a tack driver!!!

I would look into (well, not at the current point in time) at something in the .223 and .22-250 range. They are both very cheap to shoot if you reload and, needless to say, have more power so are more versatile.

Re: not wearing hearing protection... ALWAYS hear ear plugs. Im half deaf in my left ear because of it! Actually had to take the hearing test twice when I got my job.

ALWAYS wear hearing protection!

What? Lol I'm just saying they are nothing like a 22-250 or ar223 as far as noise goes. A joy to shoot

I bought twin marlins one in 22 mag and one in 17hmr.I sold the 17 and kept the 22 mag. Way more thump on rabbits and other critters and the littlest whisper of wind doesn't blow it around like the 17. And the ammo is way cheaper than the hmr too.

I stumbled across the 204 ruger while poking around online last night. Right now that has made its way to the top of my list.
