2 of 3. Dads first coues buck

Recommended Posts

After making a few trips out to do some scouting and seeing some nice bucks we were ready for our hunt. Got to camp Thursday afternoon and got to go check the hill one last time before the morning. Only saw does but there were deer and I was happy. My dad and I had been on a couple hunts before but he had never gotten his Coues buck, and my girlfriend had been lucky enough to draw her first tag ever, yet unable to be there opening day due to kiddos.

Woke up Friday morning and got to our spot half hour before shooting light and were able to watch all the otlher quads roll into the area. Wind blowing hard we were only able to glass up some does and a small spike on the surrounding hillsides in the first couple hours. We decided to make our move to spot number 2. almost back to our ranger and quad i picked up a deer on the side of a hill and saw it was a buck. We dropped our gear and got the binos up and I told my dad this one was his and started to get him set up. Now my dad has trouble in the field seeing the deer in his scope and this has been a problem before on his muley hunt. He gets so upset with himself and frusturated. So after a few minutes of him trying to find the buck my friend says Coop you should shoot this buck he is pretty nice. So i jump behind my rifle and BOOM first shot hits behind him, BOOM hit him far back, BOOM third shot put him down. Yeah for me!!! Oh there is a second buck Dad get ready you are up. Took some time to get him on the buck and then BOOM hit him in the back and the buck is unable to move. Kind of sad but planted to bullet in the buck and after another couple shots the buck was down for good.

My buddy sat and waited for us to get down to ranger and drive around to guide us to the deer on the hillside. On our way to the deer a old fart had the road blocked with his quad and went on saying that we had shot his deer and it was his spot, even though we had been there atleast a half hour before him and he had posted up 40 yards from our ranger. IDIOT!! the nerve this guy had what a buzz kill. Anyways romped the ranger around his roadblock and got to OUR bucks:-P My buck ended up rough score of 83 1/4 and my dads was a smaller 2x3. Both completely happy and another great experience shared with my dad.

My girlfriend showed up that night and was super pumped. the next morning she passed on a small 2x2, she told me she wouldn't shoot unless he was mature and bigger. Only seeing does the rest of the morning. That night the sun was setting and I spotted a nice buck bigger than mine at 667 yards and I decided it was now or never so we scaled down this steep hill and over to a ridge that would put us within 300 yards. He had followed some other bucks over the top of a ridge and only does were still in the area. We now have each afternoon after work to head back out and try for hers. Cant tell you how happy I am that this has become a family experience. Thanks for reading hope to have her dandy buck on asap.
