Crazymonkey Report post Posted October 22, 2025 Was up on my 6a cow hunt in 6a last week and found this guy . Not exactly a dead head but still a dead elk . I had my buddy Dan and his 11 yr old Cooper . It was just by chance we cut across where we did to get back to where we parked. Poor guy probably lived quite awhile before he dropped. It had a arrow in the back quarter broke off. A solid 7 x 6 . Dan was trying to get a recovery tag from fish and game so we could keep it so we are just waiting to see . If we get lucky it's going to Cooper. 3 1

Crazymonkey Report post Posted November 9, 2025 I'm heading back up to 6a tomorrow for my dad's muzzleloader elk hunt that starts at the end of the week. No word from f&g yet ! It's been a few weeks since my hunt so we will see what's left of that beautiful bull. Crazy you can pickup sheds but not a head. I had no idea that even white washed heads are off limits with out a call . I'm sure lots of people pick them up regardless. I wish my dad's hunt was a week or so ago . The weather doesn't look so good for the end of the week .
PRDATR Report post Posted November 10, 2025 Good to know. I thought any deadhead without hair was ok to pickup.

Fish and game office when we called said different . I just looked it up and it's confusing 😕 . It states no you can't pick up a deadhead but then there's a small blip about no flesh or hair attached. Real confusing . If it's still at the same spot it should be picked clean by now . It's been a few weeks. Either way im gonna take a look. Cooper really wants this head .
Lucafu1 Report post Posted November 10, 2025 Yeah, everyone reads or interprets things their own way. I hope you get it.

I've asked the same question to 4 different WMs and gotten 5 different answers before. Interpretation of some of the regs is all over the place. Some will tell you using your vehicle as a rifle rest is not considered using a vehicle in the aid of taking game, while others have a very strict interpretation that using your vehicle as a rest absolutely is considered using a vehicle in the taking of game. One thing I've gotten consistent answers regarding is picking up deadheads as long as there is no fresh meat/hide. Picking them up whitewashed or with obviously mummified fur/meat has always been ok with every WM I've ever spoken to.
Crazymonkey Report post Posted December 3, 2025 So after a month between when we found the bull and when I went back in and got a look . He had been cleaned up by the scavengers . Not much left of him at all . I did recover the head and give it my best at a euro . I do think it came out good but it's definitely not something I would do again. It's a chore and it's better for me to just pay to have it done . What do you think?
