ultra300mag Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Here are a few photos of our hunt that took place December 13-18. We got to our ranch late in the day on Saturday the 12th. After a short time glassing we had seen several nice bucks and I also glassed up a nice looking shed. My buddy Patrick glassed where I had found the shed and soon located the other side. This would not be much significance but the fact that I later killed this same buck made it a great find. The next morning my Brother Mark and a good friend Lane went to the area where the sheds were glassed and I told them to make sure to pick them up. When they got into the area before they had found a good spot to glass from they bumped a nice buck that ran over the top of the nearby mountain. Patrick and I had gone the opposite direction and had seen a few bucks but nothing that I wanted to shoot on day one. Patrick located a group of javelina and since I had never killed one I decided to pay a little extra to the ranch owner and shoot one. We picked out a nice boar and one shot at about 250 yards he was mine. We looked around a little more of the ranch before meeting the others back at the ranch house around lunch time. When we heard the story of the buck they had jumped and where he had gone Patrick and I decided we would go around the backside of the mountain and see if we could find him. We ate a quick lunch and went to see what we could find. On the way around we found a couple of bucks but again no shooters. When we got to where we figured the buck had come over the top we set up and started glassing. I soon located a nice framed buck and Pat put the spotting scope on him. He had a nice frame and was tempting but he was only a 2x3 plus eye guards and I had told myself it was 100 inches or nothing until the end of our hunt. I had not been able to break that magical 100 inch mark at that point. I then started glassing again and found a small 3x3 and then there he was. I told Patrick "here we go" and directed him to the buck. He said "that is him you need to shoot that buck." I looked for a good shooting spot and finally decided to move to a large oak tree. Once he was located again I ranged him and he was 350 facing straight on. I did not want to risk a straight on shot and hoped he woudl turn. When he did turn he only stood broadside for a second then started walking away. I thought here he goes back over the top. I got a little rattled. I can say that now but I think I was a little more than a little shook up. He stopped finally quartering away and I was able to shake the shot into him. One shot and he was down. I quickly picked up a few things and told Patrick to stay on him till I find him. When I got to him to say that I was happy would be an understatement. He was indeed the buck that belonged to the two sheds we had found. They were two year old sheds but still in great shape. He scores 104 2/8 and I am very happy to have him. The buck my brother shot scores 102 and some change. Lanes scores right at the 100 inch mark and the buck that Dave shot after trying for several days with his bow scored 89 inches. Hopefull I can get the photos to download and can share. Also attached is a picture of a nice scorpion that we found in the bunkhouse. I don't have the field photos of most of the deer yet as they are on a different camera. Mine is the buck with the tips that are only 1 6/8 apart. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I think there is a guy that Patrick knows that was able to get a permit somehow to get the sheds back out of Mexico. They are ready for him to bring back when he gets to it. We could not find the last years set but I asked the cowboy that manages the ranch to watch for them. The tip to tip spread is only 1 6/8 apart. When you look from the front straight on they would almost touch if both main beams wrapped the same. One beam is turned in a little more. He should net about 101 6/8. My best to date. Patrick Newman already asked me to bring your sheds through customs next time I bring a shipment of antlers across. It'll be alittle while. but we'll get them for you. ultra300mag Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Thanks Jim, that is part of what makes this deer so special. It is a nice buck anyway but that will be icing on the cake. Did he tell you about the bags of antlers the cowboy on the ranch had? Nothing that would knock your socks off but some ok bucks. Again thanks ahead of time. It will be fun to have them along with the mount that Patrick will do. Did you hear that Vince shot a nice one a couple of days ago. Pat said that he thinks it is between 115 and 120.
