webster's definition of assault rifle

This was brought to my attention a couple of days ago. Any one know when this first appeared or how they came up with their definition?

Why are we so worried about it? Just correct the people who dont know. The definition shouldnt be a civilian term.

Probably after 1986 when the term Assault Rifle began to be used with frequency. Now there are "people" who bandi about over the term just as there are those who have to correct everyone who refers to a AR Magazine as a (Banana) Clip and get all worked up. Quite amusing to say the least, quite amusing.
