Back when I was a kid I hunted deer in both of these unit areas, which at the time didn't exist. You bought an over the counter hunting tag and just went hunting in New Mexico!

That was 40 years ago.

Curious if anybody on CWT has hunted either of these units in recent years and what some of the challenges might currently exist in these areas?

Any info appreciated, thanks.

The amount of smugglers that pass through was a huge challenge for us in 27. Due to the lack of public access points, we decided to back pack in, and every single ridgetop in the areas we wanted to hunt had footpaths a foot wide going down them. We were forced to camp In a spot that was not very flat, nor very comfortable. I believe that 27 is a backpack hunters unit, with the potential to hunt deer that have not been seen by other hunters, but we did spend one afternoon hunting close to the truck, and found a handful of bucks. Aside from smuggler activity(more here than anywhere I have seen and I live in a border unit in AZ) and the lack of access, this unit is a great unit that seems to be equivalent to alot of the border units in AZ with way less hunters but potentially lower deer numbers. Good luck drawing a tag as a non resident. No experience in 26.

Been lurking here for a while.

Taking this opportunity to finally register and post.

I have drawn one of those NR unit 27 rifle tags for December.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. PM's welcome.

The people that say they’ve got the hunt, ask for spots then never come back and say how it went.

Hey Guys,

I was never able to make the hunt.

3 months after my post my Mother was in a bad car accident

and spent several weeks in ICU. Soon after she was diagnosed

with Vascular Dementia and required 24 hr. care. We (my wife and I) became

her primary care-giver , down a long, horrible road you would have to experience

to be able to describe.

My beloved Mother passed away May 28, 2022 here at home.

So yeah, life happens, along with death.

Lots of reason people dont "come back".

Maybe I will put in for that 27 Coues tag again this year.

Good Luck in the draws!!

It's tough loosing a family member. Even tougher as a caregiver, which not everyone has the caring, endurance and love to do 24/7.

It wasn't a dig at you, that's really just the norm when a new member asks for advice. Then they get it and never return.  At least you responded.

Sorry to hear about your mom though and good luck on your future hunts.
