High BC, Fast Twist .257...

Recommended Posts

Barrel and bullets are here! Waiting on Manners for the stock (1st week of NOV) and then off to Alamo Precision it will go!

Proof, trued Rem 700, Hawkins DBM, Manners MCST elite, PVA Ultralight Jetblast, NF rings and NX8-- should be around 9.5lbs all finished up!

Sounds like the Manson custom reamer will need to be ordered as well-

lance - have you run those bullets through fur yet?   If so how did they work?  Are their advertised BC's close?

I hope to have Taylor use them in a few weeks on a deer....

They seem to match calculated drops almost perfectly though.

Went out for one last long range verification on the rifles today.

The 131 Blackjack @ 3190 (I went with a slightly lighter load than the 3250 I was shooting before to save some brass life) are freaking insane.  Accuracy is second to none.  And they seem like they get there quick and in a hurry.  Drops are miniscule.  Shot them @ 545, 741, 910, 1181, 1250 today.

Shooting conditions:

55-80°F

27.19-27.25 barometric pressure

5-9° up look angle

Yargage=Drop (in inces) @ Elevation Dial

545=36" @ 1.9MIL

741=86" @ 3.2MIL

910=149" @ 4.6MIL

1181=300" @ 7.1MIL

1250=351" @ 7.8MIL

Let me know how they act on an animal. If they kill well it just may be the info I need to push me over the edge and rebarrel my 257 weatherby to a fast twist to run the blackjacks...

If you decide to do that let me know-- my 257wby blackjack reamer should be here next week to get my 7.5 proof spun up... after that the reamer will need a new home.

What is the reamer setup to set the overall cartridge length at? I need to see if it will fit in my magazine.

I can say the 121 Hammers fly REALLY accurately, but BCs seem WAY inflated.

Like 6-8" low at 545, 12-14" low at 741, 18+" low at 921.  I couldn't even estimate how low the 921 yard drop was.  Pretty unexpected.

545 group was very good however.  Like 1.5".

721 was about 2".

The vapor trail off the Hammers is a sight to see.  Looks like a dust trail!  I have a couple good videos of them, but here is a still frame of one.

Shouldn't be an issue at all- they shortened the freebore to .131" from the SAAMI .378"- to reduce jump with the bullet that has a short bearing surface to begin with. It's a Dave Manson reamer, no neck turn.

The 131gr bullet is 1.415" which is .2" longer than a 115VLD. Shouldn't have a problem running it from Remington box at all.

Very cool!! Is that the angle of the video or are we seeing spin drift?
