Unit 9 late rifle advice needed

Recommended Posts

Anyone willing to share some general advice on late rifle bull elk in unit 9?

First time elk hunt for me, I’ve chased a lot of Coues but never hunted elk.  Interested in things like best terrain, migration, effects of weather, etc.

l plan on scouting some during the rut just to locate bulls, will they remain in that area or migrate by early December?

I also plan on scouting again in mid November. (Hunt begins the day after Thanksgiving).

If you’re willing to share some information, respond or message me privately.

Thx, Jim

Hard unit to glass. Big bulls stay in the unit post rut. Finding bulls during the rut means nothing to your late season tag so i would spend time now through June finding bulls.

I would spend my time looking for glassing points rather than elk. If you can find sheds I bet those bulls are in that same country in November / December.

Jim, I’m in a similar boat except in 7E.  From what I’ve read, I’m gong to focus on getting to know my unit and not worry about finding the bulls now. A lot of posts indicate that their location will change when it’s time for our hunt. I don’t know anything though! Good luck on your hunt.

AC

Great point, unit knowledge goes a long ways. If plan A isn’t working, it allows you to change course.
Best of luck on your hunt as well.

There’s alot of area in 9. Some places to glass, but not alot. The biggest bulls will be on the thickest ridges where you can only see about 50yds in front of you. The biggest bulls will also be nocturnal for water.
