Live Stream of the January 16th AZGFD Commission Meeting

Recommended Posts

David Koury -  Hunting & fishing privileges revoked for 5 years.

Nicholas Debaca - Hunting & fishing privileges revoked for 5 years.

Both had a lawyer there advocating, and both were there and spoke.  I'm not surprised by the outcome though, as they were both already convicted for the offenses in the courts.  Seemed pretty forgone that their privileges would be suspended.

The Debaca one was interesting to me. According to the attorney, Debaca wasn’t near the hunter who allegedly took a shot with his feet still on the road while prone, but had the cape afterwards to take to taxidermist. Hunter that allegedly had his feet in the road took a plea detail to testify against Debaca. Game was unlawfully taken because of the feet in the roadway.

It was clear that anything said by either party or attorney was irrelevant. The outcome had been predetermined. I found it extremely interesting that Mr. Koury's attorney cited precedence of a seemingly more egregious violation of the same law where the guilty party was assigned education but no suspension.

My main takeaways. The commission members are biased know-it-alls who are reinventing laws on the fly, and if you have shown yourself to be a highly successful guide or hunter, they are going to seek out any opportunity to make an example of you. Don't waste your time or money on attorneys or even bother going to the commission meeting.

The guide is always going to be the bigger notch on the warden's belt.

That is surprising given the amount of guides that have been convicted of violating game laws in the last 15-20 years... they seem to uphold their responsibility so well.... sarcasm here...

In my world there would be a lifetime ban for any guide convicted of a game law given the additional qualifications they must pass and status given to them.

I couldn't agree more. In my opinion it was 100% pre determined before they even presented to the commissioners. Not saying they were right or wrong but a waste of their time for even telling their side of the story.

These "highly successful guides or hunters" either pled guilty or were found guilty by a court of law. You don't end up in front of the commission any other way.

Man, you are the one who has been on these guys since the beginning. Don't pretend you don't have a personal axe to grind and weren't rubbing one out as the revocations weren't being announced. These court hearings are as suspicious as the commission hearings. Debaca was a perfect example. Sounds like the actual offender got off with a slap on the wrist for throwing Debaca under the bus. What a joke! Both Debaca and Koury got screwed because of who they are more than what they did.

This site has never been guide friendly. Like Piranhas waiting for a goldfish to drop. So if a guy was prone with his feet on the road, was his body off the road? Or was he shooting across the road?

No axe to grind, have never met either one, and I wish I could have watched  the show.

Did we ever find out the actual facts about what Koury did?
