300 Win Mag hunting loads

Recommended Posts

What’s a good starting point for a Christensen Arms Mesa 300 WM hunting round ?

CA recommends Nosler 180 accubond factory ammunition

Thanks Jim

Factory or handload info?

I'm sure he is looking for load data. It's a versatile round so my question to the OP is what game are you looking to shoot? I always loaded different weight bullets in my 300 depending on what the quarry was.

Factory, look into:

Hornady Precision Hunter w. 200 ELD-X

Hornady Match w. 195 ELD-M

HSM Trophy Gold w. 210 or 185 Berger

HSM Game King w. 200 or 180 SGK

Nosler Trophy Grade LR w. 190 NABLR

Nosler Trophy Grade w. 180 NAB

Thanks guys. I should of been more specific.

I have a 280 AI shooting 168 Bergers and want the 300 as a backup for deer and anything larger. So, I’m looking for a deer/elk round heavier than what I already have.

Factory ammo suggestions and handload are welcome. Most likely will start with factory stuff and reload it later. CA Mesa is 24 inch, 10 twist lightweight contour.

I’ve read a few reviews on factory ammo and most seem to run a lot slower than advertised. I hope to be pushing 3K with the 180s or 2900 with heavier bullets.

Thanks Jim

To build onto this, I am getting ready to start loading some rounds for a new Tikka T3x in 300 Win Mag. I am probably going to start my loads with 180 grain Berger VLDs and might also try the 178 grain Hornady ELD-Xs. I have a lot of Retumbo powder, so plan to start with that.

I have the load data from Berger and Hornady already. Just curious if anyone shooting a Tikka (I find that while they do differ a bit from rifle to rifle, they do have a lot of similarities with how they shoot different recipes) has a good round using these components as a starting point for me?

Thanks

Brozovich and his crew seem to have really good luck with Berger ammunition with 215s in their Christensen’s  if you want to try factory.

What powder and weight were you using?

I have had good success with group size with 208gr ELD-M bullets in a factory Savage 300 win mag. It did ok with the 210 Berger HVLD's but the 208 ELDM showed a lot more promise. That was with H-1000 powder, GM215's, Nosler brass.

Talk to me a little about the hybrids. It has been my understanding that they are not recommended for hunting due to a thicker jacket and thus a smaller wound channel. Why have you guys opted to use them?

Thanks

H1000 74.0 .015 off the lands (though the hybrids are meant to be insensitive to seating depth.)
