Benbrown

I am a retired wildlife/conservation biologist. I live in Animas, NM, with my wife, Crystal Foreman Brown, who is a fine artist. I currently serve as Science Coordinator for the Malpai Borderlands Group, a collaborative conservation and land management endeavor consisting of ranchers, conservationists, scientists and agency cooperators. Our planning area covers approximately 1,000,000 acres in southeastern Arizona and the Boot Heel of New Mexico. We have collaborators south of the border in both Chihuahua and Sonora, as well.

I also spent three years representing the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership here in New Mexico. During my career, I taught wildlife management and wildlife conservation at two universities (Texas A&M and Kansas State University), worked for several conservation nonprofits and have managed two large ranches for owners who were focused on wildlife conservation, and wildlife habitat management. I also served as a Board Member at Large for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, and as Vice-President of the Board, although I stepped down at the end of 2016.

In addition to my work with conservation partners, I am an avid hunter, a pretty enthusiastic (if not very competent) fly fisherman and an amateur wildlife photographer. I spend most of my spare time fooling around with rifles and hand loading, although I do like to go over to Double Adobes and shoot some sporting clays once in a while, just to retain some sense of humility.

I eagerly look forward to my annual pursuit of Coues whitetails each fall. Here's hoping that I have a few more rounds left in me!
