Precautions in southern units

Recommended Posts

When I decided to apply for the "first come, first serve" leftovers, I ran my choices through my wife; she generally felt unease about the whole idea of being south of I-10. We've many nights outside, in the southern units, and agree with all that illegal traffic is possible. I settled on Unit 30B, the Dragoons specifically. Here's one reason why, related to this necesssary thread: I recall an idea from the infantry, called "natural lines of drift." People will go the easiest route, even if trying to avoid detection. Therefore, I chose the north end of the Dragoons, and figure on emulating the Apache when camped up there. That way, any illegals I see are very motivated to cover vertical terrain. I will hunt outside the natural lines of drift for the illegal traffickers.

Should perdition come, I made a ghille jacket and I'll throw it over me and hunker down. A revolver, speedloaders, and some common sense, I believe, will get me through any encounter up there in the Dragoons.

BTW: New to the stalking of the "white flags of the Apacheria", and have found the scouting reward enough. Great website!

I also hunt unit 30B as a 3-5 choice, only because I know the area and started hunting there in the 70's when it was great hunting. I have hunted there the last 4 years and have not seen an illegal. I found "old sign" of their passing through, old salsa bottles, serapes, ponchos and some trash in isloated spots but that is mainly out in the flats not to far from the San Pedro which is a corridor for that activity.

Any illegals that you will see in the thick, nasty, NASTY terrain will most of the time be drug runners with guns.

Here's one you don't see too often....

This was on the other side. We were just over the line in Mexico coming back from a hunt when I snapped this pic.

This is how they haul them to their drop off points in Mexico before they cross, and begin the damage of our deserts...

It was truck after truck like this.

Holy crap, now you got this north dakota boy all worked up!!! I've never had to worry about anything while hunting except maybe a lion, which I secretly kind of hope to find!!! I hadn't planned on hunting any of those southern units, but it looks like draw odds are far better down that way. I may have to look into it, I took spanish in 7th grade, but I think my Glock 10mm would be a better translator!!

From a person who grew up in Tucson and has spent plenty of time hunting in units south of I-10....

1. Don't scout/ hunt alone, always in pairs.

2. Do not approach a group of folks who you assume to be illegal immigrants

3. Call Border Patrol Immediately if you see a suspected group of illegals

4. Keep an eye out for game trails AND human trails (yes they are out there and yes they are very evident)

5. If confronted remember

A. From a close border patrol frined of mine, Most illegals are NOT intent on doing you any harm, and are NOT running drugs, just folks looking for work

B. He also says that its the 5% of them that will cause you trouble

C. The 5% being those that are "mules" running packs of drugs

D. Or the other half of the 5%, the Coyotes, the guys escorting the illegals, the guys with the guns

5. With regard to the Glock 10MM poster, remember to think with your head first, not with your Glock...

6. Either way use caution when in these areas and do not leave camp unattended or out of sight, the odds of your stuff being ransacked or robbed go up dramatically in this area... and by stuff, typically what is taken are food items or articles of clothing.....
