A different type of scam

Recommended Posts

Probably most of you already know about this, but in case it helps someone I wanted to bring it to your attention. My wife posted a car for sale on Craigslist, and within minutes she had 5-10 texts.

What they do is say that they have cash in hand and are willing to buy the car, but they want you to run a specific background check on it. The check can be $30-$60 dollars depending on the site.

They are the ones running the background check sites. Just giving a heads-up. I did a little research and it's a well known scam.

If you are selling and you come across one of these guys, don't fall for it.

Yeah I posted a 2013 Ram in December and I had all kinds of BS thrown at me but one that I hadn’t heard of before was they ask if you have a carfax and even if you do they want you to go to do another one with a company that likely is run by them. I got so sick of the BS I decided to go to the Carvana website and follow all the directions to get an offer and I was surprised they offered $14800 for the truck. I was asking $16500 and my rock bottom was $15000 so it was a no brainer to go that route. Was one of the easiest transactions I’ve done. Well worth taking $200 less

The report is fake

Does it even give you a fake report or anything or is it like a “sorry, you just got f’d out of $30” pop up and then kick you out?  I suppose they have your CC and info if you put it in as well?

They can run the report if they are seriously interested in it and you can deduct it from the price when they buy it! If it is as you describe it to be then they have no argument if they decide not to buy it!!!

I can usually look at a vehicle and see any signs of bodywork. Flooded cars without body damage are harder to detect.

Yep I had a guy once tell me if the truck was how I’d described it he’d give me full asking but he wanted me to pay for a carfax. I told him no that he could and I’d reimburse him if it came back with issues. He said ok. I guess he trusted me that I would pay him back but knew I wouldn’t have to as I was the original owner. He paid for the carfax and paid full asking on the truck
