11 Year Old Daughter's 2nd Coues

Recommended Posts

This is my daughter’s 2nd Coues deer. Aisha is 11 years old. We both drew leftover tags this year in a unit she killed in last year. Also we are camped with a buddy and his brother-n-law who have tags. Last year she shot a smaller buck while a boy with us shot the bigger buck standing right next to hers. Was not letting that happen this year we hunted alone.

Open day comes and we get to where I wanted to try and hunt away from people. We split up from my buddy they go one way we go another. All we see is does and little movement, so we decide to move to a different place. It’s the same hill where she killed last year. We hike up the hill at noon and have lunch. After lunch I start glassing and after about a minute I see a deer on a hill side a mile away feeding and when it picks its head I can tell it’s a buck, but the heat waves make it hard to see what it really is. I tell her to pack up I see a buck lets go. (Already) Aisha tells me, yes let’s go. We drive around into the bottom of a creek and start walking. We almost make it up to where we want to try and set up to take our shot. I peak around the hill and see a buck, then another buck a good buck. I then hear some quads coming up the road they pass our vehicle and go up about 200-250 yards and park and start glassing. By this time the deer lay down. We finally get set up 340 yards from the bucks bedded. The people on the quads glass for awhile 2-3 hours the whole time the bucks are bedded. I glass up another deer a spike watching the other hunters on the road out in the open. Then another truck pulls up and then they start glassing with the quad hunters. Now my buddy comes down the road they have a buck down in back of their vehicle. I tell them that we have a buck bedded along the road. He stops, and sets up just in case we miss. Finally the other hunters pack up and leave. The deer stand up about 5 minutes later and start feeding. We wait for a long time the buck to finally clear the brush so she can get a shot. Then I hear a my buddies ranger start up and start driving down the road the deer pretty much turns around runs right back to his bed and lays back down. My buddy wanted to get his brother-n-laws buck taken care of it, it was to hot. They stop at our vehicle and try to wait for us. He calls us to what was going on I tell him what happened. About 5 minutes later they leave and when they get out of hearing distance the bucks get up and start feeding. The bigger buck goes right back to the bush he was eating off of. By this time our set up was turning bad the sun had moved to where it was hitting on the riflescope. We have to move into the shade to where it’s not bothering her. She gets everything right and lined up (BANG) she hits the buck right perfect he humps up and runs over to the right 20 yards then turns back 30 yards and try’s to run back to bed and lays down. He’s done. I tell Aisha to move let me try and shoot the other smaller buck. I move her over and try to get set up. Looking through the scope I see her buck laying there with the other buck just looking at him. But no shot. He’s small for me, but would be nice to get a double with my daughter. The buck moves over in the clear and I can’t get steady. I shoot and then I can’t find him. All I see where he was standing is a dust cloud. After packing up and walking over we find Aisha’s buck. I find where the other buck was standing nothing. I make circles for a while still nothing no blood. It’s getting dark we have just enough time to take pictures. Aisha sat on this buck for 5 hours fighting with me, the sun and the frustration of not getting a clear shot. This was the biggest buck I found on the hunt. My buddy ended up killing a small buck. We went 3-4 on leftover tags for the weekend.

I went back the next couple days with a friend and his son who was 11 also he killed I I pointer for his first Coues deer. In all we went 4-5 for the one hunt with leftover tags. Even though I did not kill I had a wonderful hunt, Aisha did not let him get away. Watching the kids kill is always worth it.

This is Aisha’s first deer with her new gun that I had built for her (Thanks Mike). She loves it and have to make her stop shooting it can’t find bullets for it.

Thanks for reading Randy

Congratulations to her on a beautiful buck. Can only imagine the conversations you two had while waiting for a clear shot. Way to stick it out and make it pay off!
