Quail hatch

Recommended Posts

Might be a good one this year. They are even nesting in my wife’s flower pots.

this pic is from a few days ago and as of this morning she has laid 9 eggs in the pot

No ifs, ands or buts, it WILL be a great season next fall (at least for Gambels...).   Like clockwork, given the solid winter/spring precipitation (at least in most areas), there will be a lot of birds.  Most certainly a 'double hatch' year and possibly triple. ;)

LOVE IT!

Took these pics at the end of March. We have two dead palm tree trunks in our front yard, mama quail nested in one of them. They have since hatched and are roaming about.

Palm trees trunks are just a bunch of fibers held together by the bark on the outside. You can stick your hand down thru the fibers and feel the difference in temp.

So the mom bird was killed by a cat.
my brother happened to have an incubator so we put the eggs in and waited 3 weeks

What are going to do with them when they are grown?  Those invasive starlings wreak havoc on baby quail.  I have seen them eat many of the baby quail over the years.

There are a lot of quail in the neighborhood.

Probably just let them go when they are big enough.

My wife almost killed us both yesterday trying to avoid a covey of the little peanuts crossing ahead of us on a road in Vail!

Sounds like my wife. And all for a coyote.

My wife would accelerate to hit a coyote after they jumped our heeler.  Fortunately for him he was faster and got off with only one nick to a hindquarter.
