We are trying to kill the deer, not pet it. respect as very little to do with it. Have you ever seen predators kill a deer or elk?? They eat it from the back end forward most of the times. We are better than animals but we are still trying to kill them. Every time I make stupid decisions (buck fever) it is at 50 yards and under. I'm a much more respectful person at 700 than 25 if the metric we we are talking about how, is howcalm we are and how well we can make a "good shot". I've seen plenty of wounded animals from people at 100-300 yards. I'm kind of sick of this holier than thou attitude that people have for other hunters. The real sign of respect and integrity come from WHAT YOU DO AFTER YOU HIT A DEER, do you chalk it up to miss, poor shot? Do you track it until you find it or do you give up after 5 minutes? Do you even go look for it? Do you check for it for multiple days? To me that is what shows the moral and ethical side of a person. That being said in todays world/internet its best to leave off yardage. I"ve never seen much good come from it. We’re not wolves or lions, we’re humans. 25 yards is more respectful than 700, especially when you’re just lobbing and guessing at impacts. It doesn’t take much to be holier than this. Found multiple doe right from the get go. Started glassing across this canyon and found 5 bucks right away. Ranged them at just under 800 yds. Where I was positioned on the down slope of this hill I couldn’t use my bipod, so I hurried down hill to a more level spot and a flat rock. They were milling around and ranged them again at 750 yds. As I extend my bipod and position the rifle I keep looking through the big binos and I thought let’s try and see my rifle is up for the challenge. I’ve shot rocks out to 800, but never a deer. 1st shot was just above the deer, I see dirt/dust fly. Reload and send another one. Same spot, more dust. I back the clicks down 2 and send the 3rd round….. bam deer down. As I get some landmarks as to where the deer fell I start walking. 8:10 was shot, I didn’t find the deer till 9:23. The mountain was so steep and so thick of vegetation I couldn’t find the rock formation it fell by. Finally found it…..wheeew. Took some pics and started the long drag out, dropped it off at the butcher and now back at home relaxing. Looking forward to my daughters WT hunt Nov 7. Nice job! It sounds like you were by yourself, which can definitely make things more challenging. Sometimes, sharing too much information can open up an ethical debate, but I appreciate the honesty. You practiced and at some point everyone shoots a deer beyond what they practiced. I’ve seen a professional shooter—someone who competes in intense courses with varying distances, running from one target to the next and demonstrating exceptional skill—miss an animal after going through a long setup for the shot. When I got to him, I had to dispatch him with my .45. One of my kids posted the .45 shot on YouTube and people were bent out of shape for the murder. Keep on keeping on!! OpticNerd Report post Posted 11 hours ago Congrats that’s a long shot in my book. I can hit targets out to 700-800 but so far my longest on a deer has been right around 350.
