TASCO World Class and Simmons were the goto in the 80's. At least Tasco held up to recoil. Once I knew better I moved onto Leupold and Schmidt & Bender in the 90's.
krp Report post Posted December 31, 2025 Well the hunter didn't get the idea it would include lodging, dinner, blinds and decoys on his own... regardless of some fine print stating discretion of the outfitter on all points. 350 bucks to be just dropped off and strung out like dove hunting, no amenities, no real effort for the outfitter beyond gas money... is BS. Couzer Report post Posted December 31, 2025 I think we underestimate the cranes vision. Birds are smart, they see soooo much better than we think. Any odd colors, movement, etc will throw them off, even at hundreds of yards away.
krp Report post Posted December 31, 2025 4. Blind Configuration and Hunting Method Placing six to eight hunters in a single blind significantly increases the likelihood of confusion regarding harvested birds. For this reason, Ward’s Outfitters exercised professional discretion to hunt using an alternative method that morning. 7. Season Results During the current season, Ward’s Outfitters clients harvested a total of sixty-eight (68) sandhill cranes. As is customary in guided hunts of this nature, harvest success is not guaranteed, and some clients did not harvest their full legal limit. Looks to me like you had blinds and decoys, were they hunted at the same time and the 8 hunters were overflow and easy money? Of the 68 cranes how many were killed away from the blinds and decoys? I doubt it will The cranes he has on video are about 70-90 yards high. They can be killed at that distance if they’re straight above you, but there’s no way in heck they would ever fly over anyone that was hiding as poorly as he was.

MogollonMan Report post Posted December 31, 2025 Watched the video. Interesting that the hunters came up with a new plan for day 2 to spread out more over the area the birds were moving through. Shouldn't the "guides" have come up with this plan before the hunters showed up, especially if not using decoys or blinds? Definitely did not see much service for the money. A morning of scouting could have gotten you everything the guides did for you on the first 2 days. Definitely a bumber situation.

If that’s public ground, then yes I agree. Driving around for one morning would tell you exactly what you needed to know, and then just go get hid in the desert and wait for a flock to come over if you’re pass shooting.
