Favorite Coues Deer Rifle.

Recommended Posts

For up to 600 yards, the 308 is my goto rifle. Extreme precision, lethal, minimal recoil, cheap to operate and barrels last 1/2 of forever.

270 WSM Tikka T3 Lite topped with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14 BDC shooting 140 Bergers with RL 22. The gun dropped three coues last year. One at 235 yards, one at 650 yards, the other at 750 yards. Best caliber in the west. Just put a break on it and trying a new 6x18 Nikon Buckmaster with turrets. We'll see.

My boys both shoot .270WSM, one has a Howa, the other LH Tikka, awsome caliber. Howa shoots 1.1 inch groups the Tikka 1 inch groups. The longest deer have been taken is 385 yds. no problem. The howa has a Bell and Carlson stock, We have adjusted the trigger(User adjustable). the Tikka is all factory.

My go to gun is a Ruger 77 in 30-06 with trigger work and thumbhole stock. I know I'm a dinosuar but I know right where it shoots.

I've used .303 and .250-3000 Savage Model 99s, .30-30 Winchester Model 94, .270 Winchester, .243 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .257 Roberts and 7 mm Remington Magnum on Coues deer, but if I ever hunt them again (which is doubtful because of my heart problems), I'd like to try my Remington 700 BDL 6.5 mm Remington Magnum. I shot my last mule deer with it, and it's a killer.

My favorite is a .257 AI built on a Mexican Mauser action with a Krieger barrel and a Rimrock stock. It's accurate, it's light and it's completely reliable. With 110 grain AccuBonds, it is deadly as far as I need to shoot.
