Black River Small Mouth

Recommended Posts

I was up there two weeks ago Turkey hunting. River is very low. The road are decent but rutted pretty good. Access to the pump station was closed. Whites crossing and 10 of Diamonds is accessible. Plan on doing lots of walking. Water in many areas less than a foot deep.
The whole area is dry. Many of the tanks were empty. We did a little fishing and caught a few, but it’s not the same river I fished in the past.

That’s a great report Phil, thanks! My sons and I are going to head up there in two or three weeks.  Fingers crossed!

Pretty good weekend up on the Black River with my sons.  Fishing was decent, and turkeys were gobbling.  (Trphyhntr is correct regarding what he heard about permits.  Need to get them at the casino Chevron.)    Game ranger checked us on Saturday, and said there were 120 Black River permits issued for that day.  Seems like it's going to get hammered pretty good this summer, given it is still spring.

Also saw this fatty!! ;)

We were sort of 'running & gunning' up and down the river all day, and didn't really take much time for trophy pics.   We went to one of our regular producing holes yesterday just before leaving so my oldest son could catch a few to take home for dinner, though. ;)   This is the only fish pic we took.

I fished lower black river this weekend and did pretty good. It is running a lot lower than it usually is this time of the year and the moss was already starting but the bite was still pretty good. Caught and released a lot of smallmouth and kept some catfish for the deep fryer. There were other people there but never felt crowded. Probably ran into 10 or 12 people and we fished about a 3-mile stretch

Does anyone know how early the Chevron at Apache Gold starts selling fishing permits?    I like to get an early start!

Sorry I don’t know but I’ll respond to keep this near the top since it’s the only active hunting or fishing post lately...too many classified ads! LoL

This won't help you, because my only trip into the Black was in 1986 or 1987, just out of high school. I'm curious if anyone knows this spot.......Me and a buddy spent hours, mostly in the dark, driving my 74 Blazer down to what seemed like a really remote part of the river. Every road we turned down was rougher than the previous one. We had a hand drawn map someone gave us. We tossed lures for 3 days and easily caught 60 fish day. We threw our sleeping bags next to the fire and slept each night. Woke up every morning to bear tracks. Saw a few as well.

Hiking up and down the river, we saw no one for 3 days. I do remember a steel cable with a basket going across the river at one point. Anyone know this spot? If you don't want to share it, pm me. I would really be curious as to where it is and if it is now a popular, easily accessible spot. Or if it is still remote.

Sorry, not familiar with any spots that have a cable-basket crossing set-up.  The road conditions that got you there sound like several access points I've encountered over the years, though! lol  Sure wish I would have been exploring the Black river all those years ago!

On this trip, we came in from Globe and the San Carlos. We cut in way south of the Salt, so we would not have been as far north as the White River.  The cable had to be going across the Black.....we used to fish for trout on the East and West forks of the Black and access those spots from the White Mt Apache side. Those spots sure where nice and remote back in the 80s as well.

I haven’t been there in a long time but I do remember buying the permit from both tribes, catching a lot of smallies and getting really sunburnt lol
