  2. After not being drawn, a group of us picked up leftover tags. We all planned on hunting Friday thru Monday morning. On Saturday we were all able to help a good buddy's 10-year old son get his first buck. We continued hunting hard but Monday morning rolled around and my tag was still unfilled. We decided to go back to where we were opening day since we had seen a good number of bucks and felt that the area should hold some bigger bucks. After the long hike up the mountain we were in our glassing spot waiting for it to get light enough to glass. I was quickly able to find a buck feeding on a ridge around 1000 yards away. I could tell it was a 3 point but in the low light couldn't tell much about it. It joined a couple other smaller bucks that we had seen opening day and as it got lighter the buck looked pretty good. We decided to move closer to get in position to shoot. We moved to a small ridge closer to the buck and found him quickly. He was still feeding but acted like he was looking for a place to bed. The range was 500 yards, I adjusted the turret and once the buck presented a shot I squeezed the trigger and heard my brother say he's down. Here's some photos. I was shooting my new 300 Win Mag with Noslers new 210 grn Long Range Accubond. The bullet liked being pushed hard with my best groups at a muzzle velocity of 2860 fps. At 500 yards the velocity should have been around 2250 fps. The buck was quartered to me, I hit him right behind the shoulder, the bullet broke a few ribs, traveled about 2 ft through the bucks body and stopped just inside the hide of his opposite hind quarter. Below is a pic of the recovered bullet. Good looking mushroom with the solid base holding the bullet together. Weight of the bullet is 103 grn so approximately 50% weight retention.

    Skunkzilla!

4 days of glassing the Mrs.(Sarah) and I only turned up 3 deer (2 of which were muleys, ouch) To say the least, by day 4, both of us were wore out and running on fumes of hope. It was her vacation and her tag and I was feeling horrible, as this was her first hunt and 4 days of hunting only 2 deer were seen- no elk,turkeys,coyotes,javelina,coatimundis.. etc We were absolutly SKUNKED with a coues tag in-hand. This was a hard pill for me to swallow I couldnt imagine how she felt.. well this was the 3rd deer we found in the 4 days of braving the wind and rain. She made great work with the tikka .270 One shot, died in his tracks. I was blown away to watch this deer go down. Great job Teec! We wer blessed to have this time in the woods together. The best part was while we were breaking down camp together she says the magic phrase "I cant wait for next years hunt"

    Unit 10 Early Rifle Bull

Good Afternoon fellow Hunters. I am new to this so bear with me.{ no pun intended} I am mostly an avid Mule deer hunter. This year I drew a unit 10 early rifle bull tag. I know it is a big unit with much diversity and private land. I recently went to check out the unit and had a few questions if anyone can answer. I have been told that there is some good hunting around Cataract Canyon. Would that be the north or south end? I also came across a road closure at the north end of Rose wells. Is that also closed during the hunt? Also was told that there are elk out in the north praries. Is that possible? Any info on the unit would be helpful. Thanks. Muley224

    Weatherby SUB MOA

Weatherby Vanguard SUB MOA ( same as the new range certified, not to be confused with the new S2.) chambered in .257 Weatherby Mag. has a Bell and Carlson aluminum bedded stock, Black and grey spider web. Leupold base and 30mm rings that have been lapped and a Huskemaw 5-20x50 scope. I still have the two free certificates for custom turrets, to go along with the scope. I have purchased a used Hornady reloading die but haven't used it. As I never bought a reloader. I have some factory ammo to throw in as well. I have only fired factory Hornady ammo through this rifle. I will separate the scope and rifle for the right price. I can send you better pictures if interested. I currently have the scope mounted to the rifle but in the pictures it is not. Thanks If I don't answer leave a message or text, I normally won't answer calls I don't recognize Nate four8zero-6eight8-8one3nine $1750.00

  12. I'm on my first rifle deer hunt for coues and I'm looking for a little advice. If you guys are kind enough to help I really appreciate it, since I am new to this. If you feel like I am stepping on toes and asking for too much info, i guess I can understand that too. But what I want to know is do you prefer to hunt and glass from the road or do you like to hike or pack in away from the road and crowds? Also, if you find a group of does but can't find any bucks do you stay on the doe and just wait it out until a buck shows up or do you move to a new spot in search of bucks? I hunted Friday moring through Sunday night and spotted groups of does from 300-1000 yards plus. However we could only spot one button buck and a little forky. This glassing has been from or close to the road and I am really thinking about hiking in a mile or two off the roads. I feel like this would be better for seeing bucks but I am hesitant to leave the does that are closer to the road. What do you guys do and what do you recommend? Thanks for any help you guys can provide, I'm just a rookie looking for some help!

    23 Muley Hunt...

Just got back from my Brother-In-Law's muley hunt in 23 and we didn't have much luck. We hunted there for 3 full days and didn't see but 2 muleys. I glassed a coues buck opening morning at 437 yards that i think was with another buck but we could only see its rear end because it was bedded in the bush. This was at an area between black mesa and aztec peek. The next day on black mesa we walked up on 2 muley bucks that were bedded down right at sundown but they took off and we couldn't get back on them, especially without any sun. We were primarily hunting on top of black mesa and around coon creek and we had no problem seeing coues. My buddy glassed a couse buck and doe on top of black mesa at 351yards. We saw plenty of sign of deer on top of black mesa, a buck and doe skull and backbones that some coyotes got (looked like coues), one shed from a coues, and plenty of bedding spots. We were only familiar with that part of the unit and so we hunted there all three days, especially because of all the signs of deer. My question is, are there many muleys down low this time of year or are they in the higher elevation? We stayed low and glassed in the rollers but only saw coues. What have others seen and what do you recommend to get on some muleys? I hope some others that were out there had better luck, but from looking at their camps and driving past them it didn't look like it....I believe we had a tough 3 days seeing much of anything was because of the moon being almost full every single night we were there! Do you think the moon has a large part of bedded bucks during the day? Regardless it was great to get out there!!!

    Tanner's first hunt

We hunted all day Friday and Saturday of opening weekend as well as Monday and Tuesday morning. In total we saw 7 mule deer does, 3 mule deer bucks, 13 wt does, 5 wt bucks, 4 coyotes, and a bear. We hiked over 10 miles and looked at a lot of great country. We made 3 stalks and Tanner got a shot at a big 4 point mulie on Saturday morning. It was a tough shot and he went just over the buck's back. On Friday afternoon we were able to take out a coyote. My brother was there along with his oldest daughter on her first hunt. Also, thanks to my dad for coming as well. Here are some pics: We had a really great time and made some fantastic memories. Gained some experience as well.
