Real ID

What is the deal with Real ID? I don't fly much but hear they are needed to fly domestically?  Is it worth spending the time and money getting?

Yes and yes, it's a mess if you don't have it I hear. You can get around it but it could take up to 1-2 hours to verify your identity in which you can miss your flight. It's basically a little star on the top right of your DL, a national standardization of ID.

if you have a passport you don't need one to fly- you can go to a 3rd party DMV if you don't want to wait at the DMV

Funny even with TSA Pre-Check - still need a Real ID -

I called one of the 3rd party DMV's and they wanted $80. If you go to the state DMV its $25.

And you stand in line at the state for 3+ hrs at the state

If you already have a passport, its pretty simple to do it through through the AZ MVD website.  Took about 20 minutes.  They did want an upload of the passport.  Probably a different story if you don't have a passport.

If you already have a passport what is the benefit of the real id?

Did a title change yesterday at the Greenfield location, 60 people in front of me, took just over a hour. No doubt, third party is the way to go.

Yeah the 3rd party places are great. I did a title change a couple weeks ago and took less than 10 min at 3rd party. Of course nobody in line for Real ID updates then either.

I assume the benefit is not having to carry your passport for domestic flights.

You can make appointments at the DMV. You still wait but it is only a handful of minutes compared to close to an hour I waited the other day for a title transfer. I almost did both at the same time but didn't know how much longer it would take.

So ironic you brought this up, I had a guy that works at the airport yesterday was telling me people don’t have them and it’s takes 2 hours to get through tsa if they don’t
