Swivelhead Report post Posted July 13 CBS 5 is reporting that the lodge and 50 - 80 structures on the north rim have burned. What a shame if true.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 13 Yes, the lodge has burned. Mules were turned loose as there was not enough time to evac nor enough trailers. From what I have heard, many but not all NPS housing lost, backcountry office, general storee, campground, visitor center, cabins were lost. The NPS announcement seems to have some spin, imo.
wildwoody Report post Posted July 13 There was a treatment plant, and now chlorine is in the air. Also sounds like they were trying to manage a lighting strike. And lost it. Whats new

Spin is on the right track I would say. Total shame and probably preventable. Those assets will be irreplaceable. And what they do rebuild will be at great cost. This sounds like some of the same mindset that set a prescribed burn at Bandelier National Monument, which soon burned the town of Los Alamos. Stay tuned for congressional hearing on C-SPAN.

Hope they bought point guard ….., between the two fires, the entire plateau could be toast. Future hunts for deer, bison, grouse, turkey, and squirrel may be severely impacted. The Kaibab plateau is an amazing place,I don’t know how many Ecosystems it encounters, it’s the closest thing to CO that I’ve found here weather and terrain wise. The dipsticks that decided to let the Dragon Bravo burn “ controlled” should be fired, flayed, and then tar and feathered. I haven’t pulled a tag up there in years ,in fact I quit applying due to the drop in tags and increase in applicants, but truly wish to be able to hunt there with my grandson when he’s old enough. I’m not even sure if the jr doe tags are still offered . That was my daughter’s first hunt and kill. Pray for rain, and no lightning !
Red Rabbit Report post Posted Monday at 02:05 PM I have been looking at AirNow to see from the nightly IR where the fires have spread and direction they are going. https://fire.airnow.gov/#9.26/36.4945/-111.939 The Grand canyon webcam is not pretty. https://www.nps.gov/media/webcam/view.htm?id=CC0CA1C7-E607-6F46-707E19938BBFEE63

Why not both? Buildings are replaceable. Maybe not to what they used to be but being concerned for a feral animal to spread across the kaibab is a legitimate concern that would have long lasting effects. (Even if he was mistaken as to mules not being able to breed).
