Thought I had him. 1 bugle 5 am. Got on it. Found the herd and came up with a plan with the wind. Was about 30 elk. Decent bull maybe 300. I will take all day. Had to back out and get in front of him. Plan works. Herd is about 150 yds away coming right at me. All I needed was to get one more tree ahead. I get to the tree and fuk!!!!!! A cow was bedded 30 yds ahead and jumped up. Alerted the herd and that was a wrap. Found a few smaller bulls later in day. Not ready for those yet. Here was the bull IMG_2842.mov

It was awesome watching that bull work in to you and then watching you take the shot. Those are memories I’ll never forget. Thanks again for letting me hang out on your hunt.

Was able to get it done with my cousin. Called this bull in. Also ran into greenhorn walking down the road I was camped on. Got to talk to him for a little bit. Was wondering what kind of bull he was going to kill but looks like he killed a great bull. This is my first elk ever and I'm happy I got him with a bow. Not a 23N giant but a mature bull

Burned most of my vacation time in Alaska so had only 4 days to get it done. Covered in bulls everyday and this bull came on a string to some estrus cow calls. Shot him at 18 yards and again at 32. Magical morning in the elk woods. 30” dead pine he ran past after shots 👊

In 2023, I had an archery elk tag, which my brother from IN joined me. We had a great time, but the rut was very lackluster. While riding the sxs back to camp, my brother wrote this "article" regarding the poor rut, in Paul Harvey fashion. Elk Times Article Stand by for Mews On 15 September 2023, Elk Hunting Season kicked off as it has year after year as far back as anyone can remember. Hunters had anticipated this event all year and couldn’t wait to get started. What they didn’t know was... the rest of the story. In August there was an Annual Meeting between the Board of Bulls and the Council of Cow. President of the Board of Bulls Benjamin Bullwinkle made the following statement. "Every year we go through this ridiculous mating season which creates lots of fighting amongst our whole community. It seems as though we are stuck in a rut of some sort. Now, this may rub some of you the wrong way, others may get a chuckle but I am going to propose the following solution. I propose that Cows be divided equally amongst all Bulls that register prior to the Fall Equinox. This will eliminate the need for all the bugling, showing off, etc. There has been a Spike in noise complaints lately, so this should help. Ladies, you don’t always have to have the hunkiest Bull. Guys, you don’t have to have the hottest cows. I think we can all agree that this solution is best for our community." After this, a vote was taken and the proposal passed by a majority. Grunts, barks, glunking, and chuckling filled the room as they departed. Now you know, the rest of the story.

Well guys no stalks tonight. Glassed up a few herds far but just couldn’t tell the size of the bulls. About 50 elk tonight and a giant herd in the neighborhoods. One thing about city hunts is a lot of locals protect there elk. Back at it in the am.

IMG_3845.mov Well guys eventful morning but no success. Out at 4 am and saw some herds and no bugles at all. We r lucky the first week so not chasing ghosts. 1st heard about 50 elk and 2 small bulls. Next heard had 1 small 4x4 and rest cows. We decided to get high before light and finish some coffee. Right at first light glass up a small herd but with the fog just couldn’t see a bull. Kept glassin. Right below us about mile out find a bull sniffing the air. About 30 min later my son glasses up a herd and boom there he is. A decent shooter. Go time. And guys I am not a trophy hunter at all. Ask many guys on here. But 1st week I want to try on something decent. Get in truck and head over there. I have a general idea where they r. Will I just missed them. I really needed another person on hill guiding me in and could have had a chance. Well I start hearing a bugle and I head that way. Well there was a hunter carrying a foxpro in his hand and just letting bugles rip. Scared my bull right out of there. Here he is slipping away. Breakfast time.

It was a very slow start and hot. Maybe that’s normal - I don’t know. The last week was real good and there were nice bulls around. I passed this bull earlier in the hunt because of a couple others I’d seen. But on the last day - I figured I’d better shoot if I wanted to take an elk home with me. The other non resident from Oregon got a real monster. I met a lot of nice people here and made some new friends - stayed in AZ from 8/30 through the whole hunt. My elk is all on ice and I’ll be working my way home today. It was a really great hunting experience. Thanks to everyone who had given me tips and advice. I was hiking back to my truck one day and met Vincent - while he was cutting up his elk meat at his camp.
