For a 300 Wiz I'd go 9 twist if not 8 twist for those 180-190 pills. At some point you may even want to try 200-220 with the 8 twist. The big issue will be a throat length for the chamber to accommodate your magazine length and those 180-190 bullets. Make sure to discuss this with your smith. Think about where you want to seat your bullets if you will be handloading. Also I would recommend a 24 or 26 inch barrel for the 300 WSM. Those slow burning powders that it takes to propel the heavier bullets burn more efficiently in 24 or 26 inch barrels. Good efficiency equals better extreme spreads and tighter groups especially at longer ranges.

In 3-4 years you will be in the same boat, years short of it. You're only chance is a random tag unless you out live everyone. With just short of 1000 non-resident with 23 points or more and about 20ish tags for late 12's and 13's including archery 13's going per year thats a lot of years. That's exactly why the early 12's have seen the point pass increase in the last several years.

I would burn on an early Kaibab hunt while you still can, as that will probably pass you up in the next couple years as the “strip tag or bust” crowd is gonna realize they’re never gonna catch it.
